Frank Kimbrough Trio -][- LIVE AT KITANO –Mp3– [Palmetto, 2012] –

Pianist/composer Frank Kimbrough has been active on the New York jazz scene for nearly 30 years. He is currently a Palmetto recording artist, having previously recorded as a leader for OmniTone, Soul Note, Igmod, and Mapleshade. Frank was a founding member and composer-in-residence of the Jazz Composers Collective (1992 – 2005), and during the Collective’s existence played in nearly twenty of its associated groups. He continues to perform solo concerts and with his trio, and is otherwise in demand as a sideman. Frank’s playing has been recognized by his inclusion in the Downbeat Critics Poll each year since 2001, and his recordings are often included in jazz critics’ year’s-end top-ten lists. Frank Kimbrough - Rumors

Frank Kimbrough | Rumors – [Palmetto Records, 2010]

You want some jazz recording done old skool? Kimbrough gets a call from a pal telling him he’s four free studio hours available the next day. Wanna use them? Kimbrough scurries to get a cat he wants to play with that’s heading back to Barcelona, rounds up a third piece, a set card and the fur flies in three hours of recording. As close to pure improv as you can get, this is certainly a set with feeling and smarts played by cats that don’t need to be told what to do.

It’s art jazz that really smart jazz and proof of why he‘s on the speed dial of so many players in New York. —Chris Spector, Midwest Record Recap

Released on March 30th …

Frank Kimbrough | Chant – [Palmetto Records, 1998]

Frank Kimbrough - Chant

Chant is a relaxed yet inspired trio date featuring pianist Frank Kimbrough with two of his closest associates from the Jazz Composers Collective: bassist Ben Allison and drummer Jeff Ballard. Along with brief, delightfully understated readings of Ornette Coleman’s “Feet Music” and Jimmy Giuffre’s “Phoenix,” the trio wades through three collaborative improvisations. “Chant,” a loosely structured piece, begins with a riff that vaguely recalls McCoy Tyner’s “Effendi“; “Broadside” is propelled by a funky, unchanging swing motif that sets up clearly demarcated solos by Kimbrough and Allison; and “Motility” brings the trio to a rolling boil, with Kimbrough soloing over a swinging medium tempo, framed by bass and drum solos at the start and finish, respectively. —David Adler

According to Palmetto Records, “Chant” is available for download only [MP3 or FLAC].
