Ron Miles, QUIVER

Master trumpeter Ron Miles injects his radiant, lyrical tone directly into the lifeblood of American music on his latest release, Quiver. A compelling, inviting trio date with guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Brian Blade, Quiver combines the singing melodicism of American folk musics, the heightened communication of the most progressive jazz forms, and an entrancing, airy openness. The album finds three genre-defying musical masters at their creative best, lacing easy camaraderie with virtuosic interaction. Continue reading →

Voted #2 Rising Star Guitarist in 2012 Down Beat International Critics Poll

Rez Abbasi TRIO, Continuous Beat

Inventive guitarist Rez Abbasi takes the pulse of the modern guitar trio on his ninth album, Continuous Beat. Embracing the use of electronics and effects to broaden his sonic palette to a much further extent than he ever has in the past, Abbasi evolves the scope and range of possibilities of the traditional guitar/bass/drums format far beyond its apparent limitations.

“People often think of the jazz guitar trio and relate it to all things historical,” Abbasi says. “That’s not to say that the Jim Hall trio records aren’t some of my favorite albums of all time. But it’s 2012 now and we’ve heard a lot of purely ‘warm’ guitar trio albums. I wanted to stimulate the listener’s aural perception throughout the album – to give them a sense of textural surprise from start to finish that embodies both that warmth and the desire to push away from the commonplace.” Continue reading →

Donny McCaslin, CASTING FOR GRAVITY

“With his expansive feeling and unadulterated love of music-making, McCaslin is in some ways the Sonny Rollins of his generation.” – Ottawa Citizen

“I’m hard pressed to think of other horn players who can routinely deliver performances as astonishing and Herculean as McCaslin’s-and even better, he always uses his prodigious energy in the service of a greater musical purpose.” – Chicago Reader

“It was radical. With fire-breathing fists, (McCaslin)
deployed his ordinance to the ground…” – Boston Globe

Florian Weber, BIOSPHERE

Borders present challenges for artists. Jazz musicians, who, in the past century, re-constructed the evolution of musical history, continue to be particularly open to the possibilities offered by those challenges. Melody, harmony and structure have been questioned stylistically and artistically. Rhythm, however, has been a comparatively fixed element, even when the free era re-directed it from a linear approach towards more of a pulse. So when the curious musician looks for borders to explore and cross, rhythm and meter still carry many secrets worth investigating. Continue reading →

Chris Parrello, THINGS I WONDER

New York City has long been the proving ground for jazz musicians, but for all its opportunities it can be a harsh, unforgiving metropolis. Guitarist/composer Chris Parrello has been confronted with all of those same challenges, but with one advantage: as a native New Yorker, he’s always been able to count on a strong support system – what he refers to, in the title of his new EP, as a Concrete Cradle.

“It’s hard here in the city,” Parrello admits, “and it’s hard trying to be an artist generally. When people who aren’t from here go through difficult times, they’re on their own. I’m thankful for the fact that when things got tough, my city and my family and friends were here.” Continue reading →
