Chick Corea and Gary Burton -][- HOT HOUSE – [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

Pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton became a collaborative team almost by accident. Their first musical encounter took place at a jazz festival in Germany in 1972, when they performed together in a spur-of-the-moment encore. The results were so satisfying not only to the audience but to the artists themselves that the two musicians reconvened in a recording studio a couple months later to record the intricate yet highly melodic Crystal Silence, their first of several collaborative studio projects. Arturo Sandoval -][- Dear Diz (Every Day I Think Of You) –MP3– [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

Arturo Sandoval releases his second album on Concord Jazz, Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You). The album is Sandoval’s tribute to Dizzy Gillespie, the mentor and friend who literally rescued him and his family from an oppressive existence and gave them a chance at an entirely new and better life. The album is a collection of classics from Gillespie’s massive body of work, each framed in big-band arrangements that throw the spotlight squarely on the elements of bebop that underscore so much of the iconic trumpeter’s work and set the tone for the music of his era. The New Gary Burton Quartet - COMMON GROUND

On Gary Burton’s debut release on Mack Avenue Records, Common Ground, the Grammy-winning pioneer of the four-mallet technique of playing the vibes is not only delivering his first studio album since 2005, but is also introducing his latest band. Known as the New Gary Burton Quartet, the group is comprised of guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Common Ground features 10 tunes, including six remarkable originals by quartet members as well as two impressive numbers by pianist Vadim Neselovskyi (a former Burton band member), a gem from the Keith Jarrett songbook and an intriguing arrangement of the standard “My Funny Valentine,” spotlighting Lage.

Well-known throughout his five-decade career for his quartets (beginning with his 1967 group featuring Larry Coryell, Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow), Burton is returning to the configuration for the first time since the mid-’90s. He expresses great enthusiasm for the new band’s alchemy. Continue reading →

Gary Burton signs with Mack Avenue

Mack Avenue Records is proud to announce the signing of Grammy® award winning vibraphonist Gary Burton. The signing comes after Burton launched the New Gary Burton Quartet in a sold out, week-long North American premiere at New York’s Blue Note in October 2010. Featuring guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Antonio Sanchez, their debut album, Common Ground, will be released in the U.S. on June 7.

For over five decades, Gary Burton, a six-time Grammy® award winner, has crossed musical barriers and generations with his innovative ensembles. His quartets have featured a unique mix of established musicians while discovering and showcasing younger musicians, many of whom would soon become some of the world’s most recognizable artists. Musicians such as Larry Coryell, Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and most recently Julian Lage, began their careers in Burton’s esteemed quartet. With Lage, Colley and Sanchez, this is Burton’s new incarnation and revitalized group: a new quartet for a new era.

“Mack Avenue is a company on the way up, and there’s no better place for an artist to be,” reflects Burton. “Now I have a new band and a new record label, and lots of plans for the future.” Continue reading →

Antonio Sanchez - Live in New York

Antonio Sanchez -][- Live in New York – [CAM Jazz, 2010]

After the global success of “Migration“, Antonio Sanchez returns with this splendid live recording for CAM Jazz. This new release, where all of Sanchez’s talent is unraveled and fully appreciated, is a double-album recorded live at Jazz Standard in New York in October of 2008.

Technically the Mexican drummer impresses for his appearance, color and dynamics, but it’s even more amazing observing once again how the diversified vocabulary displayed behind the cymbals and drums is not an ending but a medium through which he discloses his own world of sound, unique and fascinating.
