Florian Weber, BIOSPHERE

Borders present challenges for artists. Jazz musicians, who, in the past century, re-constructed the evolution of musical history, continue to be particularly open to the possibilities offered by those challenges. Melody, harmony and structure have been questioned stylistically and artistically. Rhythm, however, has been a comparatively fixed element, even when the free era re-directed it from a linear approach towards more of a pulse. So when the curious musician looks for borders to explore and cross, rhythm and meter still carry many secrets worth investigating. Continue reading →

Niels Klein Quartet, RISE

Niels Klein Quartet -][- RISE –Mp3– [Fuhrwerk Musik, 2012] –

Contemporary Jazz from well experienced reed player Niels Klein from Cologne, Germany. His rhythm section is formed by the now famous Pablo Held Trio, with Pablo Held on piano, Robert Landfermann on bass and Jonas Burgwinkwel on drums. That swings!

German sax-player Niels Klein, who has got great experience in writing even for Big Bands and classical orchestras is gifted with a very individual and colorful sound-language. With his very personal album RISE he shows – once again – his big talent for writing compositions in the actual jazz language. Flavoured with surprising sound-changes, his melodic approach – both in his compositions and in his improvisations – is always very expressive. The whole quartet impresses with a big range from quiet, sensitive moments to very energetic explosions. -[Album Notes | CDBaby.com]-

The Soul Jazz Dynamiters | Self-Titled – [Blisstone, 2009]

The Soul Jazz Dynamiters - Self-Titled

Original compositions in a charming old school design take a sharp look into the future. Four outstanding musicians from southern Germany, known for their own creative projects, such as bartmes, lejeune matin or the European Groove Orchestra and for their participation in internationally renown acts like Dephazz, Jon Sass‘ Sassified, Ack van Rooyen or the Hessen Radio Jazz ensemble. —Blisstone

This gem by The Soul Jazz Dynamiters is exclusively for music lovers who adore sounds with the old school flavor. I’m simply enthralled to hear and see the musicians from Europe (Germany) wrap their heads and voices around jazz. In this case, the bands influence is “Soul Jazz.” They’ve done a superb job in capturing the essence of this sound via their rhythmic yet odd-metered compositions and killer arrangements throughout this ten track session! ~ Rob Young | The Urban Flux
