Ed Cherry, IT’S ALL GOOD

Ed Cherry -][- IT’s ALL Good –Mp3– [Posi-Tone, 2012] –

Everyone should stand up and take notice as guitarist Ed Cherry returns strongly on the scene to remind everyone that “It’s All Good!” With his first release on Posi-Tone, Cherry unleashes a powerful trio date featuring the solid harmonic foundation of organist Pat Bianchi and the explosive metrics of drummer Byron Landham.

Many jazz fans may already be familiar with Cherry’s earlier work, but now the time has come for a new generation to discover the bold and melodic guitar mastery of Ed Cherry. We are confident that “It’s All Good!” and Ed Cherry’s musical message will surely delight the ears of serious listeners and bring a joyous shout and groovy swing to jazz fans everywhere.

Eric Essix -][- SELF-TITLED –Mp3– [Essential Recordings, 2012] –

In 2000, while signed to Zebra Records, Eric Essix decided to explore the soul, R&B, gospel and country music that he grew up listening to in his home state of Alabama. It was the start of a musical journey that began with “Southbound” followed by “Somewhere In Alabama” on his own Essential Recordings label in 2004 and now has brought him full circle with his latest offering, ”Birmingham”.

Eric recorded his debut album as a solo artist in 1988 for Nova Records called “First Impressions” and 15 albums later he is still making music that moves; that captures the imagination…that touches the emotions. Eric’s last three recordings have been particularly revealing and personal, giving the listener an up close look at the man behind the music and the place he calls home. -[Excerpt | Biography]

Charles Compo -][- FOOLISH PLEASURE –Mp3– [Chads Music, 2012] –

Jazzy, edgy, moody, cinematic, jammy, creative, hard hitting, cinematic music. This collection of compositions written by Charles Compo was recorded in a couple of days up in the woods at Hal Winer’s Bi Coastal Music. Each song highlights the creativity and energy of a group of musicians that have played together in and around New York in various combinations for over twenty years. The music can be described as expressive contemporary jazz that tells a story. Continue reading →

Lionel Louke

On August 28, the acclaimed West African jazz guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke will release Heritage, his dynamic third Blue Note album, which was co-produced by label mate Robert Glasper. Heritage finds Loueke—who was hailed by The New York Times as “a gentle virtuoso”—exploring a more electric sound with a new trio featuring Derrick Hodge on electric bass and Mark Guiliana on drums. The album presents seven new compositions by Loueke, two by Glasper, and one co-written by the two. Glasper also contributes piano and keyboards to six tracks, while singer Gretchen Parlato provides background vocals on two tracks. Continue reading →

Isaac Darche, BOOM-BAP!TISM

A great sense of excitement and joy permeates the music on Boom-Bap!tism (BJURecords, May 15), the sophomore CD release from guitarist/composer Isaac Darche, featuring Darche on guitar, Sean Wayland on Hammond B3, and the ubiquitous Mark Ferber on drums. “I think the mojo, or the special sauce, of this session was excitement. Sean, Mark and I were just really going for it. We were having so much fun in the studio and the results exceeded our expectations”, said Darche. “I believe this album reflects my values as a musician. I try to respect and extend the jazz guitar tradition from inside its own logic, and produce a product that is original and new in some way. I give 110% everyday, trying to constantly improve, and I believe this is what it takes to create something that inspires people and opens their imaginations to new possibilities.” Continue reading →

Allan Holdsworth, HARD HAT AREA

Allan Holdsworth -][- HARD HAT AREA – [Moonjune Records, 2012] –

Bookended by the quasi-orchestral compositions Prelude and Postlude, the music on Hard Hat Area was in some respects simply a logical extension of the ultra-sophisticated and highly idiosyncratic style of jazz-fusion that Allan Holdsworth had developed on his previous seven albums. But in other respects it was quite different, perhaps the most significant difference being that it was recorded by the guitarist’s touring band, which had refined the material by performing it live before entering the studio. ”It was more of a band record than my previous two, which were almost more like solo records,” says Holdsworth.” Continue reading →
