Jonathan Kreisberg -][- ONE – [New For Now Music, 2013]

While recognized for his band leading skills on his international tours and countless CD’s (as well as side man work with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joe Locke, and Ari Hoenig among others) One marks guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg’s first recording made up of entirely solo guitar performances. The program boasts a daring range of material and introduces the world to his unique polyphonic approach.

Although at times it’s hard to believe, the entire recording is one man on one track. Modern jazz, a Brazilian mythical tale, folk, and improvised music for an imaginary science fiction soundtrack are all refracted through Kreisberg’s prism to create a bold and complete tale. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

Wanderlust, the new recording from New Orleans guitarist/composer Cliff Hines, is a rich tapestry of ideas, inspirations and sounds patched together from various times and places in the world. It is a sonic journey, an electro-acoustic blend traveling from one culture to the next. In making this record, Hines and co-producer/engineer Ian Painter gathered together some of New Orleans’s finest musicians, including local legends James Singleton, Bill Summers, Kent Jordan, Dave Easley and Helen Gillet, coupled with some of the best musicians of the new generation, including Khris Royal, Ashlin Parker, Mike Watson, Rex Gregory, Sam Craft and Jack Craft. Hines’ core band features vocalist Sasha Masakowski, drummer Paul Thibodeaux, bassist Jasen Weaver, and pianist Andrew McGowan. While all of these musicians are well versed in jazz, rock, funk and many other genres, the music they created together on Wanderlust defies convention and categorization. Continue reading →

Kurt Rosenwinkel -][- STAR OF JUPITER (Double Disc) – [WOMMUSIC, 2012]

Philadelphia-born jazz guitarist/composer Kurt Rosenwinkel first earned attention playing alongside such iconic artists as Gary Burton, Paul Motian, and Joe Henderson. Star of Jupiter marks Rosenwinkel’s first quartet recording in more than a decade, following 2001’s groundbreaking The Next Step. Here the National Endowment for the Arts Composer’s Award-winner offers a contemporary variation on that classic ensemble work with a stellar new band that includes pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.

An intricately conceptualized collection of original compositions (all but one previously unrecorded), Star of Jupiter transports listeners on a remarkable journey toward transcendence. Kurt Rosenwinkel once again displays the vision and brave artistry that place him among the most influential and inventive guitarists and composers in music today. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

David Gilmore -][- NUMEROLOGY – Live at Jazz Standard –Mp3– [Evolutionary Music, 2012]

Numerology Suite is a musical exploration into the mystical, divine, and spiritual meaning of numbers, which reflect the creation of the Universe and the underlying structure upon which the material world is built. Music is the language of the Universe, and the elements of music – harmony, melody and rhythm, are all expressions of number.

Pythagoras, the father of mathematics, taught that the numbers one through nine represent the universal principles and progressive cycles in life. Here, David Gilmore invites the listener on a musical journey as he interprets these nine musical cycles through sound and vibration.
