Buster Williams, SOMETHING MORE

Buster Williams -][- SOMETHING MORE –Mp3– [In+Out Records, 2011-|-1989] –

. . . What more could you want? This late eighties classic session on the German label In & Out (who also brought us the great and largely unheard band Roots) features Herbie Hancock (piano and keyboards), Wayne Shorter (soprano and tenor sax), Al Foster (drums), and the brilliant (and largely unknown) Japanese trumpeter Shunzo Ohno. With leader Buster Williams, who has played with Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Woody Shaw, and McCoy Tyner, this is a killer band. Somehow, this disc has flown almost completely under the radar. And that’s a shame, given the level of playing consistently on display. Continue reading →

During our musical journey we’re consistently faced with a plethora of options and resources to explore music within various context, genres and perspectives on our quest to discover or even rejuvenate our spirit to embellish something new and refreshing. Sooner or later we’ll find ourselves attracted to the sonically intriguing sounds of “MAIDEN VOYAGE” from the genius and incomparable artistry of the legendary Herbie Hancock along the way! —Rob Young | The Urban Flux

Herbie Hancock - MAIDEN VOYAGE

Herbie Hancock ]|[ MAIDEN VOYAGE – (The Rudy Van Gelder Edition) – [BLUE NOTE, 1965]

The players on Maiden Voyage are essentially those of the Miles Davis band – but how different from Miles’ records it sounds and feels! In 1965, Herbie Hancock’s leadership and vision were rapidly taking shape.

This album placed Hancock firmly in the company of the great jazz musicians. He had proved his mettle as an innovative and individual pianist on such excellent records as Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil (Blue Note, 1964) and Miles’ E.S.P. (Columbia, 1965), both recorded only months before. Now he led a group he knew intimately, and wrote enduring pieces for the date that were to become admired for decades to come.

The title track sets the tone for the whole record: subtle, measured, contemplative. It’s the first solo opportunity for the perpetually underrated George Coleman, who displays virtuosity without arrogance, elegance without contrivance, depth of feeling without sentimentality.

Impeccably orchestrated pieces like “Little One” and the closing “Dolphin Dance” establish Herbie Hancock as the complete musician: inimitable pianist, creative composer, charismatic leader, supreme stylist. –Ricard Giner | Customer Review

The city’s largest music festival takes over this summer!
TD Toronto Jazz Festival – June 25 – July 4, 2010

Toronto ~ Late June signals not only the start of summer, but also the arrival of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival as it takes over the city for 10 incredible days. Local clubs, restaurants, venues and even a church or two will be playing host, creating a Festival network that includes over 40 participating stages all over the city. Now, that is a lot of jazz!

Harry Connick Jr. – Sun 06/27 (Canon Theatre)
A true consummate entertainer, Harry Connick Jr. has successfully launched careers in both acting and music with the corresponding accolades to show for it – 25 million albums sold worldwide, three Grammy Awards, an Emmy award and a starring role in a Tony winning Broadway musical. Harry appeared in his first jazz recording at the tender age of ten, by 18 released his solo debut and at 30 appeared in movies such as Independence Day, Copycat and Memphis Belle. It has been over 20 years since Harry last performed at the Festival and his return is long overdue. Welcome back, Harry. The hub of the Festival is Nathan Phillips Square and it is here where some of the biggest names in jazz can be found. Each evening, the Mainstage tent is transformed into an intimate concert theater. Continue reading →

New Releases [Jazz] … for the Week of 6/21/2010

Greetings’ jazz aficionados, I’m back with another slice of distinctive, and insinuating sounds, immaculate melodies, relentless rhythms attached to the opulent flavors embedded & freely exalted from the vibrant voice of jazz is here to quench our ongoing thirst for quality music.

Featured Album of the Week-6

Herbie Hancock - The Imagine Project

Herbie Hancock -|- The Imagine Project – [Herbie Hancock Records, 2010]

As always, I’m honored to showcase the “Featured Album of the Week.” On this occasion, I have for the first time a non-jazz recording drafted and transcribed from the prolific collective and imagination of the legendary Herbie Hancock who as we know is truly one of the most innovative pioneers of the modern jazz (music) era.

In 2008, Hancock was awarded the “gold medal” in the music industry “Album of the Year” for his 2007 release “River: Letters to Joni” his tribute to the transcending pop music icon songwriter/vocalist Joni Mitchell.

Apparently, the remarkable Hancock couldn’t rest after the success of Letters to Joni. Moreover, it took almost two years for Hancock to compile the material and talent to record his long awaited and highly anticipated release titled “The Imagine Project” which get this debuts on his own label “Herbie Hancock Records” reveals another side of brilliance within Hancock’s transcending soundscape.

“The Imagine Project” is a collaborative musical exodus which was plotted, arranged and poignantly formulated from the genius of Herbie Hancock. It seems, the purpose of the offering much like his previous vocal collections attempts in my mind successfully tears down the temporal walls inherited in our segregated mindset to unleash volumes of unyielding musical ideas that are generously poured through the vessel of his vast yet intimate travels to score music from a global perspective which exudes an artistic velocity rarely heard from the hearts and souls of singers and musicians that he summon to record this magnificent project.

Once again, the genius of Herbie Hancock prevails as he daringly takes the world on a music excursion and adventure like none before … what a way to celebrate his 70th birthday! —Rob Young/The Urban Flux Continue reading →
