Charles Lloyd, Athens Concert

Charles Lloyd -][- Athens Concert -(MP3)- [ECM, 2011]

Recorded at the foot of the Acropolis, at the open air Odeon of Herodes Atticus, on a summer night last year, “Athens Concert” is an entrancing collaboration between Charles Lloyd, uniquely expressive US saxophonist, and Maria Farantouri, venerable Greece vocalist – the soul of Greece for many listeners. With Lloyd’s exceptional band in impassioned support, the project raises the bar for `trans-cultural’ music-making. The music sweeps the listener along in its swirling river of sound. This is music of many moods and currents – celebratory, yearning, melancholic – embracing suites of traditional Greek music, songs of Theodorakis and Eleni Karaindrou, and Lloyd originals. The Lloyd band and Farantouri perform with a commitment that underscores the essential compatibility of the idioms. The great Greek themes of love, exile, nostalgia, and departure find their correspondences, after all, in the history of jazz. And if Farantouri is not a jazz singer per se, she embodies an emotional power comparable with the greatest vocalists of any genre. Lloyd writes in his liner notes: “From her first notes I felt such a power and depth of humanity; she is a modern wonder rising up from the ruins of civilization. She is Alethea, Athena, Aphrodite, Demeter, Gaia, Phemonoe – Mother of the Universe. The resonance of her voice stirred the memory of my love for Lady Day.” Continue reading →

With the Labor Day Weekend just around the corner it’s great to come acquainted with some new music. In fact, recently a good friend pointed me to this fabulous recording by the legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd. If you will, check it out this incredible ensemble and let me know what you think about it? —Rob Young | The Urban Flux

Charles Lloyd Quartet - Rado de Nube (Live) ECM

Charles Lloyd Quartet -][- Rabo de Nube – Live – [ECM, 2008]

At age 70 Charles Lloyd has delivered the best performance of his career. However, credit for this fantastic live set belongs to all performers on this group not just Lloyd. Each performer (Jason Moran on piano, Eric Harland on drums, Rueben Rogers on bass) play with telepathic communication and flawless execution on this live set recorded in Europe in 2007. The music at times reminds one of Miles Davis’ mid 60’s work, Coltrane’s mid 60’s work, and on some tracks pay tribute to Thelonious Monk. The sound quality of the set is beyond perfect. Each musician’s instrument can be heard with crystal clear accuracy. If a pin dropped on the stage, you would have heard it.

While I’ve grown to expect outstanding performances from Lloyd, Moran, and Harland I was not familiar with bassist Rueben Rogers before listening to this set. I have to say I could not have been more impressed in my first listen of his work. Throughout the set Rogers delivers tight walking bass lines that fit perfectly and also has many brilliant solos. This will be on everyone’s list of the best albums for 2008 and will top many listeners’ list for top album of the year. —Scott Williams | Amazon.com

Flux Music Essentials

Greeting’s jazz lovers, I’m back in with another tantalizing yet satisfying blend of original jazz that’s shaken and well stirred to perfection from the shelves of the “Flux Music Essentials.”

Mimi Jones - A New Day

Mimi Jones -||- A New Day – [Hot Tone Music, 2009]

Mimi Jones, multi talented bassist, vocalist and composer, brings her beacon of musical light to the world while embracing a positive future with her inspiring messages. Mimi’s elegant sound is an eclectic mix of genres based in a strong jazz foundation that leave room for funky bass grooves, world beat rhythms, gentle textures and the soulful cries of the Wurlizer. “My music taps in directly to the senses using elements of jazz, folk, rock, blues and different sounds from around the world which have all had such a profound effect on me.”

Her inspiring debut recording, ”A New Day” is bursting with original compositions seamlessly melting from one song to another and caressed by the warmth of Mimi’s sultry voice. The music is a rich assortment of rhythmic statements, musical textures, and compositional variations all flawlessly executed by Mimi Jones (acoustic bass, electric bass, vocals, composer, arranger, and assistant producer), Marvin Sewell (acoustic and electric guitars), Miki Hayama (piano, key board and Wurlitzer), Marcus Gilmore (drums), Lucianna Padmore (drums on tracks 1 and 11) and Ambrose Akinmisure (trumpet). The title of the CD speaks of embracing a changing world with a positive point of view while maintaining the courage to move forward just as the new persona and alter ego, Mimi Jones, was transformed from “side man” Miriam Sullivan in order to fully express her individual messages of change and personal evolution. —CDBaby.com Continue reading →

Jason Moran - Ten

Jason Moran -|- Ten – [Blue Note Records, 2010]

In 1999, the same year that Jason Moran released his debut Soundtrack To Human Motion, the prodigy pianist and composer also joined New Directions, a band made up of young stars from the Blue Note roster that went on tour in celebration of the label’s 60th anniversary. At the core of New Directions was the genesis of a rhythm section–with Moran, bassist Tarus Mateen, and drummer Nasheet Waits–that would go on to become one of the most enduringly creative piano trios in jazz.

Ten years later, the trailblazing trio–which Moran has since dubbed The Bandwagon–headed into Avatar Studios in Manhattan to record Ten, the most assured and focused album of Moran’s acclaimed career, a snapshot of a mature band with a decade of shared musical experience from which to draw. The album, Moran’s first in four years, will be released on EMI’s Blue Note Records. Continue reading →

Jason Moran - Soundtrack to Human Motion

Jason Moran | Soundtrack To Human Motion – [Blue Note, 1999]

Jazz pianist/composer Jason Moran’s debut, Soundtrack to Human Motion, approaches his music with an abstract, impressionistic outlook. Inspired by artists as diverse as painter Jean-Michel Basquiat and composer Maurice Ravel on tracks like “JAMO Meets SAMO” and “Le Tombeau de Couperin/States of Art” and “Gangsterism on Canvas,” Moran applies a kinetic, graceful touch. Vibes, alto and soprano saxophones, bass and drums complete Moran’s sonic palette on this impressive first album. —Heather Phares

:.|:. Brooklyn resident Jason Moran brings a distinctly artistic touch to his jazz compositions and piano playing. The impressionistic approach of visual and musical artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Maurice Ravel inspire Moran’s playing and writing style, on both his own compositions and his work with jazz contemporaries like Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, and Stefan Harris. Moran’s debut album Soundtrack to Human Motion appeared in 1999; Facing Left followed a year later.
