Eldar | Virtue

With his fifth recording attached to his list of accomplishments pianist Eldar strengthens visionary altitude by charting rigid territory that’s captivating, vertically challenging, and his relentless dexterity is simply breathe taking! Virtue, his latest underscores his ongoing symmetric journey therefore defining himself as a impressive voice to reckon with in today’s jazz! ~ The Urban Flux

Eldar, Virtue

Eldar, Virtue

Eldar | Virtue [Masterworks Jazz “Sony,” 2009]

Eldar Djangirov continues hell-bent on dazzling audiences with his impressive technique, speed-demon array of notes, and music that is displaying more of a jagged edge and abject angular inventions. The staggeringly pronounced music he is making takes a different turn on Virtue, utilizing horns and synthesizers, but it’s mostly his kamikaze acoustic piano — frequently turning on a dime — that is the centerpiece. Djangirov receives help from Joshua Redman, who plays tenor and soprano sax, and trumpeter Nicholas Payton on one cut apiece, as well as saxophonist Felipe Lamoglia on four selections. Rarely displaying reserve, Djangirov is fully gassed up and ready to wail on these pieces that require acute listening skills to hear everything being dished out, but for him must seem naturally supercharged. – Michael G. Nastos

Jaspects | Double Consciousness

Jaspects is an extraordinary fusion group from Atlanta demonstrates why we should be careful not to judge the book [sound] by it’s cover. I’ll be the first admit, I am not a fan of Hip-hop music. It’s a generational thing I suppose. However, this band’s ingenious method to blend music together was the deal breaker for me. Jaspects third offering “Double Consciousness,” is a unique collection of genres wrapped solidly into one voice is absolute brilliance. ~ The Urban Flux

Jaspects

Jaspects | Double Consciousness [Jaspects Music Group, L.L.C., 2007] On The Flipside

Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Neosoul fused all-in-one without being corny. Simply put, a “Fusion of Hip-hop and Jazz WITHOUT compromise.”

Jaspect’s third independent release titled, “Double Consciousness,” has been described by the band as a “more defined representation of the Jaspects sound,” by drummer Henry Conerway. “With this project, we wanted to break out of any box that anybody wanted to force us in,” James King explains. “We can’t be defined because we are constantly redefining ourselves.” Musical director T. Brown echoes King’s sentiment, “DC represents the steady maturation of the band as we become more in-sync with ourselves as writers, musicians, artists, and performers.”

Listen up, contemporary jazz and fusion jazz lovers I’ve just discovered and awesome keyboardist from Turkey named Fahir Atakoglu. You’re gonna want to feast your ears on this gem, I believe you’ll love it! Also check out, “Istanbul In Blue” from 2008. Don’t you dig music with an international flavor??

Fahir Atakoglu | Faces and Places [Far&Here LLC, 2009]

As a follow up to his hard-hitting fusion offering, 2008’s Istanbul in Blue (a guitar-intensive project that featured the dazzling six-string work of Mike Stern and Wayne Krantz), the accomplished Turkish-born pianist-composer-arranger Fahir Atakoglu casts a wide stylistic net on Faces and Places, deftly incorporating musical elements from Spain, Brazil, the Middle East and New York City into the compelling mix. On board for this dynamic outing are such world-class players as trumpeter Randy Brecker, guitarists Wayne Krantz and Romero Lubambo, Yellowjackets saxophonist Bob Mintzer and the outstanding rhythm tandem of bassist John Patitucci (a longstanding member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet and a composer-band leader in his own right) and the great Cuban drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez. Together, with the addition of some challenging and highly interactive string arrangements, they make a potent statement on what stands as Fahir’s most impressive and ambitious outing to date.

Kevin Hayden | Delegations & Assignments

Kevin Hayden

Kevin Hayden

Kevin Hayden is a drummer who is known to articulately translate speech through musical notes on the drums. Born on May 25, 1980, in Fort Wayne IN, he began to take an interest in drums at the age of 2. Coming from a long line of family drummers to include his father, Tracey Hayden, it is no wonder that he loves his craft so much. Kevin was brought up in church where he had the opportunity to play the drums for various choirs. When he was 13, he was noticed at his church by a visiting community choir director, which led to his involvement in hundreds of local performances, a live recording and tours in Georgia and Texas.

Dave Milne | Present Tense [Jazz/Fusion]

Eight years ago, Dave Milne wasn’t even sure he’d be playing music at all, let alone putting the finishing touches on his debut as a jazz saxophonist and composer. Through a life changing journey that has taken many twists, turns and unexpected detours the 30 year-old Portland, OR- based artist has arrived- with a Steely Dan, Soulive and OutKast meets Stan Getz and David Sanborn style that is leaving jazz and industry heads bobbing in his wake.

Greeting’s and “Happy New Year,” to my fellow jazz enthusiast. We’ve finally began to settle down a bit after a short yet enthralling Christmas break. As we get prepared for the upcoming months hopefully the record industry and artist alike will continue to release new and provocative music. Perhaps, until new music arrives we’ve got a few exciting projects by four of the prolific artist in jazz for the “Weekend Spin.”

Hiromi | Spiral [Jazz-Fusion/Telarc Jazz/2006]

Hiromi, Spiral

Hiromi, Spiral

Hiromi Uehara may not be a household name but with each succeeding recording she proves herself a sophisticated composer and an astonishing and eclectic pianist. Her style, while incorporating elements from Ellington to Bad Plus, is unique. She criss-crosses stylistic boundries on Spiral, keeping the sound interesting on every track – all originals. With the exception of Return of Kung-Fu World Champion, she stays away from the electronics that were more present in Brain and somewhat in Another Mind. Infact Kung Fu…is the barrier to a 5-star rating. At times, Uehara sounds a bit like Michel Petrucciani when she sticks to the acoustic piano, though she refrains from being as showy as the French great. Tony grey on bass and drummer, Martin Vailhora round out an outstanding trio. ~ Amazon.com

Joe Zawinul | 75 [Heads Up/Feb09]

Keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul, who succumbed to cancer September 11, 2007 at age 75, left behind a half-century legacy of brilliant music that will last for generations. Born in Austria and originally trained in classical music, Zawinul embraced the jazz tradition at a young age and eventually pushed the art form to unprecedented limits via his two most innovative projects, Weather Report and later the Zawinul Syndicate.

Despite the medical and physical challenges of his final months, Zawinul’s regimen of composing and performing never let up. Indeed, one of his final performances proved to be one of his best.
