Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship, SONG OF SIMEON

My vision for this recording was to create a musical journey through the deeper themes of the Christmas narrative. Using ancient canticles, hymns, and folk melodies, I chose eleven pieces to formulate a layered chronology that illustrates the profound, spiritual mystery of the radical biblical story of the birth of Christ. Together the eleven tracks make up a programmatic suite in two parts, organized around a line from the biblical Song of Simeon that describes the miracle of Christmas: “A light to enlighten the nations and the Glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:22-35) Continue reading →

Eric Person, Thoughts on God

A landmark recording, Thoughts on God, is the most recent release from prolific saxophonist and composer Eric Person. His ninth disc as a leader, the fifth on his own Distinction Records label and first funded through the Kickstarter program, an on-line funding platform for creative projects. Having fronted several different units including Meta-Four and Metamorphosis, as well as the cooperative TrioKinesis the veteran horn man is heard here leading his own jazz orchestra for the very first time. Person is an alumnus of the forward looking big bands of McCoy Tyner, David Murray and John Hicks, and is best known for his wide-ranging sideman work with Dave Holland, Chico Hamilton, and World Saxophone Quartet. On Thoughts on God, Person exhibits the fruits of lessons learned during his quarter of a century of diversified experience. The pieces composed for this twelve part suite are inspired by his powerful abiding faith in the positive force of the Creator. Continue reading →

Negroni’s Trio, ON THE WAY

The latest release, On The Way, from Negroni’s Trio, the distinctive unit featuring the father/son team of multitalented Puerto Rican pianist/composer Jose Negroni and his son, the powerful gifted young drummer Nomar Negroni, celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Miami based ensemble that continues to garner international acclaim in jazz and world music circles. Jose Negroni, a disciple of legendary Sonora Poncena pianist Papo Luca and an esteemed educator, renowned for his work at native island’s Conservatory of Music, established the band in 2002 as a vehicle for his unique artistic vision, combining elements of jazz, AfroCaribbean and European classical musics. Utilizing the potent polyrhythmic sensibilities of Berklee educated Nomar Negroni, nominated in 2008 as Best Drummer of the Year by The Latin Jazz Corner, the group realizes a visionary music that is greater than the sum of its individual parts. Andrea Brachfeld, LADY OF THE ISLAND

“Wish it – dream it – do it.” That’s what one of my many car bumper stickers say . Why am I talking about my bumper stickers? Well, because my dream has always been to play jazz, and this record is my dream come true! I just didn’t expect such amazing musicians to play on my record, but here they are, and here I am! Oftentimes life has many circuitous paths we follow in order to get to where we want to be. Our plan is not always God’s plan. I guess mine has been curvaceous as well.

My musical path began when I played my first jazz gig at age 16 at “All Nite Soul,” then found myself with the title of the first woman in the US to play in a Charanga band in 1976. After taking a semi-hiatus for about 15 years in 1998, I put together a Latin Jazz band and recorded and produced my first CD. Now I’ve come full circle to playing my first love, jazz. The hard work, persistence, determination, visualization techniques, the process of letting go, and then hoping that what I want, is my destiny, has paid off. Continue reading →

Greg “Organ Monk” Lewis -][- ORGAN MONK: Uwo in the Black –Mp3– [Greg Lewis, 2012 | Review] –

Self-taught organist Greg “Organ Monk” Lewis’ ambitious new recording daringly unearths these marvelous stones with his groundbreaking interpretations of ten classics by jazz pianist, innovator and composer Thelonious Monk on his sophomore album “Organ Monk: Uwo in the Black.” At a glance, “Uwo” in the North African Nubian dialect signifies the number two in their culture, with that said the New York native broaden voice augments through four distinctive originals which undeniably compliments this homage paid to the iconic renaissance man Thelonious Monk. It all started back in 1978, when my father brought home this LP for me, the debut album by a brand new band, including some ex-pupils of the school he taught in: it was called “Shake That Boogie-Woogie”. They called themselves the “Mojo Blues Band”, and that was it for me – as soon as the record-player’s needle lifted up at the end of the record, I started it back from the beginning. Greg Lewis, ORGAN MONK. Uwo In The Black

The second outing by Greg Lewis, Organ Monk: Uwo In the Black, builds upon the success of the first call New York keyboardist’s critically acclaimed debut date Organ Monk. Volume Two of a proposed trilogy of discs (uwo signifies the number two in North African Nubian dialect) exploring the music of Thelonious Monk, Lewis expands upon his original concept here, adding the tenor saxophone of Reginald Woods to the powerful mix supplied by his Hammond C3 organ, the guitar of regular bandmate Ron Jackson and drums of longtime colleague Nasheet Waits (sitting in the seat previously occupied by Cindy Blackman-Santana), while filling out the program of ten Monk melodies with four of his own inspired compositions.
