Tom Randles -][- Destination Music City –MP3– [Flyjazz Music, 2012]

Contemporary jazz guitarist Tom Randles gets down to business and back to his soul roots with his fourth CD, DESTINATION MUSIC CITY. Randles, an award winning multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, recorded his latest project in Nashville Tennessee, home to some of the finest musicians and sound recording engineers on the planet, creating an aural landscape you’ll want to explore again and again. Check out Randles’ jazzy version of famous R&B cover tune, PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND! Fine solo saxophone work by Kenny Anderson (Gloria Estefan, Tom Jones, Larry Carlton, Arturo Sandoval, Bobby Caldwell) and master trumpet player Jim Williamson (Aretha Franklin, Michael McDonald, B.B. King, The Temptations, Randy Brecker) take this project to a whole new level. “I really wanted to work with some great players and I tried to make the most of that opportunity. Continue reading →

Gregoire Maret -][- Gregoire Maret [Entertainment One, 2012]

Prepare yourself for the most important debut jazz recording since Esperanza Spaulding broke through a few years ago. Gregoire Marét is not only a musicians musician as evidenced by the testimonials above but hes a charismatic virtuoso whose musical concepts are at once highly melodic, soulful, swinging, and elegantly exploratory.

On his debut album, Gregoire proves himself to be a master interpreter of works by Chick Corea, Milton Nascimento, Stevie Wonder, Pat Metheny, and others; and also an impressionistic composer of great panache and sophistication in his own right. The selections are extended, diverse, richly textured and always engaging.

Supported by an impressive cast, including vocalists Cassandra Wilson and Raul Midòn, and bassist Marcus Miller, Gregoire Marét has brought forth that rare creation in todays jazz an album that is simultaneously forward-looking and in the moment. State of the art, 2012.

Groove-Centric Disc Debuts Bernard’s Touring Trio With Wil Blades (B3) and Simon Lott (Drums)

Will Bernard Trio, Outdoor Living

The life of a touring jazz musician doesn’t involve a lot of what most people would picture as “the great outdoors.” Guitarist Will Bernard’s groove-heavy new organ trio CD Outdoor Living, however, pays tribute to an entirely different kind of landscape. Roads stretching to the horizon viewed from the windows of a van, the cracked pavement of city streets, motel parking lots – this is the scenery that Bernard brings to light on these nine original tunes. Johnathan Blake, Eleventh Hour

Johnathan Blake -][- The Eleventh Hour –MP3– [Sunnyside, 2012]

Grammy-nominated drummer and composer, Johnathan Blake, has been working steadily in the contemporary jazz scene for the past 10 years. He has been a first-call drummer for many notable jazz musicians such as Tom Harrell, David Sanchez, Russell Malone, Kenny Barron, Randy Brecker, and Oliver Lake to name a few. His musicianship, professionalism, and positive attitude are few of the attributes that make him the choice drummer for many. In addition to being a sideman, Johnathan performs with his own group internationally. Continue reading →

Dan Wilensky -][- Back in The Mix –MP3– [Speechless Productions, 2012 | Review]

Ann Arbor, Michigan born saxophonist and composer Dan Wilensky joins us with his forth recording to illustrate his virtuosity, hard-working and endless pursuit to score new songs and re-invent the shape of timeless classics meshed together to underscored with precision on his latest “Back in The Mix.”

Thus far, I’m pleasantly surprised with Wilensky’s crisp and vibrant tonality, he noticeably enunciates his sound through the vine of nine lively and abstemious tunes which in essence solidifies his presence for new and seasoned listeners alike.
Out of the gate, I immediately hear why the legendary Ray Charles added Wilensky (who at the time just graduated from high school) as lead alto player for his big band. Wilensky called his analogous colleagues Mark Soskin on piano, Dean Johnson – bass, Tony Moreno plays drums and Russ Johnson on trumpet is here to serve up a palette of scrumptious grooves. MIX OF ORIGINALS AND STANDARDS PRESENTED WITH WARM TONES AND A YOUNG PERSPECTIVE ON LOVE

Halie Loren, Heart First

Some singers sing to themselves, some sing to crowds. When listeners hear singer, composer, and instrumentalist Halie Loren weave her genre-spanning magic, they are convinced that she is singing just to them alone, with authenticity and emotional maturity. As she makes music with her voice, she understands the deepest meanings of the lyrics and communicates them with great intimacy. Still in her twenties, Loren has released several albums and toured the world singing jazz and pop. Her new album, Heart First (Justin Time Records), features long-time collaborator and co-producer Matt Treder on piano, Mark Schneider on bass, William Seiji Marsh on guitar, Brian West on drums, Sergei Teleshev on accordion, Rob Birdwell on flugelhorn and trumpet, Hank Shreve on harmonica, and Dale Bradley on cello.
