Dave Douglas describes the title of his new release, Be Still, as “aspirational.” The continually evolving trumpeter and composer settles down for a ballad-like set that presents a series of hymns and folk songs with an intensely personal connection. Be Still brings out the most lyrical side of Douglas, and introduces both a newly configured Quintet, and an important new collaborator, vocalist and guitarist Aoife O’Donovan. Continue reading →

Saxophonist Jon Irabagon, winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk Competition, has been nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) in both the “Up and Coming Artist” and “Tenor Saxophonist of the Year” categories for its prestigious 2011 Jazz Awards.

In the “Up and Coming Artist” category, Irabagon joins such talented musicians as Ambrose Akinmusire, Darius Jones and Gerald Clayton in being recognized as those to watch in coming years. Other nominees in the “Tenor Saxophonist of the Year” category include such legends as Chris Potter, Joe Lovano, Sonny Rollins, Tony Malaby and Wayne Shorter. Award winners are selected by JJA members who have until May 11th to vote.

“In looking at who has been nominated in both of these categories and the incredible body of work these artists have put out, the cliché that it’s an honor just to have been nominated is true,” said Irabagon. “It’s absolutely amazing to have my name on the same list as those who I see as the best and most thought-provoking musicians in jazz today.” Continue reading →

Noah Haidu -][- SLIPSTREAM – (MP3) – [Posi-Tone Records, 2011] – Music Review –

Noah Haidu - SLPISTREAM

Based in New York, pianist-composer Noah Haidu originally from Charlottesville, VA debuts with his engaging bop induced yet lyrically intense album titled “SLIPSTREAM” on Posi-Tone Records. All compositions on this recording were written by Haidu with the exception of “Just One of Those Things” composed by Cole Porter.

Out of the box “SLIPSTREAM,” sonically encompasses the familiar tonality and melodic attributes the masters in jazz has recorded for years. Is Noah Haidu doing anything audibly different or thought-provoking? Many view his sound as cutting edge, his music is rhythmically tight and harmonically on point. As I listen, his voice ascends while evenly balance in the language of jazz to provide potent melodies with substance which should generate lots of conversation about what this remarkable young musician has to offer anyone who is willing to listen.
