New Years Eve Performance Introduces New Group
Featuring Bassist Larry Grenadier and Drummer Eric Harland

Audio Stream of Performance Now Available at NPRMusic.org

Lage’s Working Ensemble to Make Winter Jazzfest Debut
at New York’s Sullivan Hall, January 6

JULIAN LAGE

Following significant activity in 2011, which included the release of his critically acclaimed album Gladwell and national international tours with vibraphonist Gary Burton as well as his own ensemble (among other highlights), virtuoso guitarist Julian Lage has yet another ambitious year planned for 2012. He most recently unveiled a new group and will continue to perform with his working ensemble, the Julian Lage Group.

On New Year’s Eve 2011 – 2012, Julian Lage launched 2012 by kicking off Toast of the Nation, an all-night broadcast of live jazz from venues across the U.S. – presented by NPR Music, WGBH, and WBGO. Lage introduced a new group: the Julian Lage Trio (featuring bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Eric Harland with a surprise guest, saxophonist Dan Blake). The performance took place at Lage’s alma mater, the Berklee College of Music’s Performance Center in Boston, in front of a sold-out crowd. Audio from the performance can now be streamed at NPRMusic.org. Continue reading →

The New Gary Burton Quartet - COMMON GROUND

On Gary Burton’s debut release on Mack Avenue Records, Common Ground, the Grammy-winning pioneer of the four-mallet technique of playing the vibes is not only delivering his first studio album since 2005, but is also introducing his latest band. Known as the New Gary Burton Quartet, the group is comprised of guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Common Ground features 10 tunes, including six remarkable originals by quartet members as well as two impressive numbers by pianist Vadim Neselovskyi (a former Burton band member), a gem from the Keith Jarrett songbook and an intriguing arrangement of the standard “My Funny Valentine,” spotlighting Lage.

Well-known throughout his five-decade career for his quartets (beginning with his 1967 group featuring Larry Coryell, Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow), Burton is returning to the configuration for the first time since the mid-’90s. He expresses great enthusiasm for the new band’s alchemy. Continue reading →

“With its constantly shifting moods, transparent textures, and unexpected references, ‘Gladwell’ rewards repeated listening; it’s a destination that sounds like nothing else on the map.” – Boston Globe

JULIAN LAGE GROUP - GLADWELL

“…a unique and beautiful ensemble sound and gripping solo pieces.” – Chicago Reader

“The folk and roots make it clear this is a guitar album – the kind of experiment that recalls the immersion of Gary Burton and Steve Swallow in “guitaristic” rock-influenced composition, or their collaborator Pat Metheny. But Lage, with his taste in vintage acoustic and electric-guitar sounds, his own mix of influences, and this unusual ensemble,
is doing something just as radical.” – Boston Phoenix

LISTEN TO EXCLUSIVE STREAMING TRACKS FROM GLADWELL

Following his Grammy-nominated 2009 debut Sounding Point, virtuoso guitarist Julian Lage returns with the evocative and finely wrought Gladwell – the second effort by his offbeat, eclectic group with cellist Aristides Rivas, percussionist Tupac Mantilla, bassist Jorge Roeder and saxophonist Dan Blake. JULIAN LAGE

Following his Grammy-nominated 2009 debut Sounding Point, virtuoso guitarist Julian Lage returns with the evocative and finely wrought Gladwell – the second effort by his offbeat, eclectic group with cellist Aristides Rivas, percussionist Tupac Mantilla, bassist Jorge Roeder and saxophonist Dan Blake.

The album unfolds according to a fanciful and story-driven plan, as Lage explains: “We began playing with the idea of creating a story we could use as a guiding light in our writing process…. The result was the development of an imaginary and forgotten town known as Gladwell…. As a metaphor, Gladwell presented us with a clear architecture, to compose songs that evoke feelings of people and places we hold dear.” Continue reading →
