Kenny Barron -][- SWAMP SALLY –Mp3– [Verve, 2012]

This album is quite unique and it deserves your attention even if unfortunately it is out of print actually. Well, if you find it used, you can buy it with confidence. It has been recorded in 1995 and it’s not a common Jazz album with piano, double bass and drums. Here you have the fantastic Kenny Barron at the piano obviously, but he plays keyboards and double bass too and the incredible Mino Cinelu who plays a lot of different instruments (mandolin, banjo, guitar, keys, drums, percussions, additional sounds effects … and he sings too in a couple of tune). It is a collaboration of these two artists exclusively. The result is a very strange album, very entertaining and incredibly well played and written. The world of this album is surely Jazz, but there a lot of different flavours inside that take the music here and there. -[Excerpt: Jazzcat | Customer Review | Amazon]-

Erena Terakubo with Legends -][- NEW YORK ATTITUDE –Mp3– [Four Quarters Records, 2012] –

Erena Terakubo is barely 20 years old, and she has already accomplished what many musicians her age only dream of…Her debut album in North America on Four Quarters Entertainment, features accompaniment by the legends of Jazz, including Kenny Barron on Piano, Ron Carter on bass, Lee Pearson on Drums, and Dominic Farinacci on trumpet.

Erena was born in Sapporo, Japan in 1992, and developed a love for the alto-saxophone, which she began learning at the age of 9. While still in her early teens she started attending workshops by famous visiting jazz musicians such as Herbie Hancock and Tiger Okoshi. When she was less than 16 years old, she attended a five week summer program at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and her talent earned her a full scholarship to the institution, which she has been attending since 2009. At the same time, her talent and virtuosity was beginning to be noticed in Japan by the press as well as by Japan’s jazz greats like Sadao Watanabe, Terumasa Hino, and American greats like Eddie Gomez, Anthony Jackson, etc. Continue reading →

Jimmy Owens, The Monk Project

Jimmy Owens -][- The Monk Project -(MP3)- [IPO Recordings, 2012 | Review]

As any veteran jazz enthusiast will concur, trumpeter | flugelhornist Jimmy Owens needs no introduction. In his own right, Owen’s a principle player in the stable of his luminaires in mainstream jazz. With his latest endeavor, he pays homage by instinctively transforming the pulse and spirit of the music of the legendary Thelonious Monk composer-pianist extraordinaire on his latest recording “The Monk Project” now available on IPO Recordings.

On this project, Owens tackled this collective by calling in top-shelve talented musicians to record this record: includes the irreplaceable Wycliffe Gordon – Trombone, Marcus Strickland – saxophone, Howard Johnson – Tuba/baritone saxophone, Kenny Barron – piano, and Winard Harper – drums. James Moody - 4b (Dig)

NEA Jazz Master James Moody returns to the recording scene with his sixth appearance on IPO, Moody 4B, the swinging sequel to last year’s critically acclaimed Moody 4A. Made in New York City in July of 2008 the disc marks Moody’s 60th year as a recording artist. Of the many great records that he’s made during those six decades he considers these among his most special. Moody says, “This recording was a total pleasure because producer Bill Sorin let me be me, musically. So many of the previous producers of my albums wanted a “concept.” Well, how about the concept being “Moody”? Bill is wonderful!!” And so is the record. With the spotlight focused on Moody’s brilliant playing, without the demands of trying to squeeze his ingenious improvisations into someone else’s preconceived model, we hear this jazz icon at his imaginative peak, free to be totally creative playing the music he loves the most. Tusica in Jazz

Expands Its Summer Programming

Civita di Bagnoregio is a town in the Province of Viterbo in Central Italy

From July 8 through August 14, 2010, in the Viterbo region of Italy (about 43 miles from Rome), the countryside town of Soriano nel Cimino and city of Nepi will host the 9th edition of the Tuscia in Jazz Festival.

For the past eight years, Tuscia in Jazz has been considered one of the most important international jazz festivals, as well as an important vehicle to promote the beautiful region with its Etruscan roots, Roman history, medieval hill towns and unspoiled lakes and forests. Tuscia in Jazz has extended its branches significantly: with a record label to release recordings of its unique live performances, by adding workshops with world-renown pianist Kenny Barron and rising-star drummer Francisco Mela, and incorporating the annual Jimmy Woode Award for bass playing.
