Arturo O'Farrill - 40 ACRES and A BURRO

Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra -][- 40 ACRES and A BURRO – [ZOHO, 2011] – MUSIC REVIEW –

New York based and internationally known Grammy winning composer/pianist Arturo O’Farrill returns with another spirited blend of Latin jazz at its finest titled “40 Acres and a Burro” on ZOHO MUSIC. As history buffs, you should be acquainted with this term “40 Acres and a Mule” (other than Spike Lee brand) being that the origin of the phrase goes back to 1865 when confederacy was occupied by the Union and therefore promised the slave’s farmland for them to potentially (illusive) earn a living on once they were freed. Fast forward, no wonder the GOP is ill tempered about the Black farmers and Native Americans finally got what was due to them (defeat and payback dwells in the heart of the oppressors).

The highly-acclaimed pianist Arturo O’Farrill ushers in a comprehensive collection of lively Afro-Latin jazz which subsequently provides a wealth of heartfelt music which gives jazz aficionados the opportunity to clinch, savor and enjoy this amazing musical extravaganza from my Latin brother’s perspective. “Ortiz and his quartet explore a broad landscape of musical styles, performance techniques, and compositional strategies on Alameda, an inspired collection of diverse pieces.” – Chip Boaz, The Latin Jazz Corner

Alameda features Aruán Ortiz (piano & Rhodes), Abraham Burton (saxophone – 1,2,4,6,7,8), Antoine Roney (saxophone – 2,4,8), Peter Slavov (bass), Eric McPherson (drums)

ARUÁN ORTIZ

Jazz pianist Aruán Ortiz, “the latest Cuban wunderkind to arrive in the United States” (John Murph, http://www.BETJazz.com ), hit the ground running when he came on the American jazz scene in 2003. A classically trained violist and pianist, this Santiago de Cuba native’s sound is as marked by the influence of the contemporary classical composers such as Schoenberg, Ravel, and Copland, as it is by traditional Afro-Cuban sounds and jazz greats such as Bud Powell, Art Tatum, and Thelonious Monk. A major testament to his massive talent, since setting foot in the States Ortiz was quickly called upon to perform and record with artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Greg Osby, Cindy Blackman, Esperanza Spalding, Gary Thomas, Wayne Krantz, Rashied Ali, Stefon Harris, Horacio “el negro” Hernández, Giovanni Hidalgo, Lionel Loueke, Jane Bunnett, Jerry Bergonzi and others. Ortiz is currently a member of jazz legend Wallace Roney’s Quintet, Sound of The Future, and is prominently featured on Roney’s new live recording, If Only For One Night (High Note, 2009).

Sergio Mendes | Bom Tempo – [Concord Records, 2010]

Sergio Mendes - Bom Tempo

Sergio Mendes, producer, composer, arranger pianist, band leader and cultural sage, continues his magical ride with Bom Tempo, a beautiful slice of rhythmically fresh inspiration from the internationally celebrated artist. He remains as vibrant and vital today as he was when leading Brasil ’66 to international superstardom. Mendes’ modern sensibilities and ultra sensitivity to the intricate and beautiful Brazilian musical language he himself helped create has always been his focus. Born Tempo expands the maestro’s use of color, texture and street derived energy, highlighting his mastery of authentic Brazilian rhythms and composition. In the end, Bom Tempo is a brilliant summer day celebration.

Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra – Bolero Nights (for Billie Holiday)

Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra | Bolero Nights (for Billie Holiday) – [Venus Records – Japan 2009]

Brian Lynch - Bolero Nights

For a fleeting moment -just one fleeting moment- it appears to be a bit of a stretch putting “bolero” and Billie Holiday together. There appears to be a tad too much “bolero” and not enough “Holiday” on Brian Lynch’s Bolero Nights (Venus Records – Japan 2009). Soon, however, the plaintive wail of Lynch’s trumpet and moan of his flugelhorn and the moody arrangements of “Afinque” start to tie “bolero” and Billie Holiday rather tightly together. Although the music is by no means ponderous and depressing to listen to, there is an elemental sadness to it. This is a masterstroke on the part of Lynch because Billie Holiday embodied something similar as she sang her heart out on so many classics. Mercifully, Lynch also avoids the obvious ones. However, he is masterful in mimicing the voice of the great chanteuse with long “blue” notes -especially in the first chorus of “La Sitiera,” when Lynch draws them out in his inimitable manner with dynamic expression.

Only some of Ellington’s great trumpeters were known to have done this with untouchable effect, and trumpeters such as Larry Cramer and Reynaldo Melian. –Reviewed by Raul de Gamma (Read the full review)

Mario Adnet & Phillippe Baden Powell | AfroSambaJazz – [Adventure Music, 2009]

Adnet & Powell - AfroSambaJazz

Truth is told: Had the great Billy Strayhorn been even mildly interested in courting recognition for his contribution to Duke Ellington’s music, he would have occupied a much more rarified place in the pantheon of composers and arrangers – and even pianists – in the modern history of music. His reticence, even diffidence, was all encompassing. Mario Adnet could very possibly be the same kind of personality. AfroSambaJazz (Adventure Music 2009) is just another example of this. Adnet has made a magnificent record musically honoring Tom Jobim, shepherded three spectacular projects in homage of the great Moacir Santos – not to mention a superb period piece, Samba Meets Boogie Woogie… Now he’s at the center of this highly polished revue of the music of legendary guitarist, Baden Powell. The fact that he is joined by Phillippe Baden Powell, son of the late master, who provides great insights into his father’s music and sensitive arrangements on many tracks and spectacular piano, when called for, puts the proverbial cherry on the cake. Antonio Valdetaro | Leticia – [Independent Artist, 2009]

Antonio Valdetaro & Group, Leticia

Born in the city of Niteroi near Rio De Janeiro, Valdetaro traveled to Europe to expand his knowledge and study music. In the meantime, he decided to hone his skills by gigging with Europe’s finest musicians extensively throughout the continent under the helm of his contemporaries Barney Kessell and Kurt Rosenwinkel before returning to his native land Brazil and soon settled Sao Paolo.

On this wonderful collection of nine originals, Antonio is accompanied by his talented cohorts in conversation with their interplay reveal with zeal Valdetaro’s rich and vibrant tone which embodies the true intimacy of these stylist, complex and sophisticated nuances that embraces the innermost details the compelling sounds of Bossa Nova. There are moments, his distinguished voice is reminiscent of another influential guitarist named Pat Metheny. Continue reading →
