David Basse, UPTOWN (feat. Phil Woods & Mike Melvoin)

For the past twenty years, David Basse has been at the forefront of the music scene in the legendary jazz capitol of Kansas City. Basse carries on a tradition started half a century ago by icons Charlie Parker, Count Basie and Jay McShann. He has played his special kind of Kansas City jazz at concerts, clubs and private parties throughout the world.

When the producers of A&E’s television series “City Confidential” needed to explore the Kansas City Jazz scene for a new production, they contacted and filmed David Basse. Basse has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, All Things Considered and Barbeque America on PBS. David Basse’s City Light Orchestra has been hailed as Kansas City’s premier swingin’ jazz ensemble. Since its inception in 1982, bandleader and songwriter David Basse’s voice has been a signature of the Orchestra’s sound.

Sachal Vasandani, HI-FLY

“What makes a jazz singer has more to do with a set of tools and instincts, and by that measure Sachal qualifies as one of the stronger new arrivals in the field…The flexibility of Mr. Vasandani’s phrasing would mark him as a jazz singer whether or not he ventured any scat choruses…he’s a jazz singer with good ideas, including some about what a jazz singer can be.” – New York Times

LISTEN TO AN EXCLUSIVE STREAMING TRACK FROM HI-FLY

With his breakthrough 2007 debut, Eyes Wide Open, vocalist/composer/arranger Sachal Vasandani established himself as one of the most promising voices in modern jazz. Andy Bey - AMERICAN SONG

Andy Bey -][- AMERICAN SONG – [Savoy Jazz, 2005]

Usually, I’m not the one to rave about standards instrumentally or vocally for that matter. However, in this case I was captivated in my first encounter by the brilliance and symmetry of Grammy nominated vocalist extraordinare Andy Bey. Perhaps you will, like me find his bravado, spellbinding and soothing while his flawless interpretations redefine this timeless collection of wonderful songs mesmerizing.

After a twenty-two year absence from recording, Andy Bey returns with “American Song” one of four albums to position his voice in this infinite landscape of popular vocal artists. With this project, he works his way through the intricacies of the elegantly stated revisions of “Prelude to A kiss, Speak Low, Caravan, Lush Life, Satin Doll, and Lonely Town.” After the first spin, you’ll probably wonder why you haven’t indulged and absorbed his smooth, expressive and rich baritone before now? As Bey’s voice resonates seamlessly through the fabric of each song you’ll find yourself emerged in the enchanting lyricalism as he reshapes these classics with his unmatched style and swagger like you’ve never heard before in the context of “American Song.”

As jazz enthusiasts, if you haven’t done so take some time and familiarize yourself with this remarkable singer he will simply blow you away with his uncanny lyrical prowess and warm timbre eloquently displayed throughout the canvas of “American Song” by vocalist Andy Bey. —Rob Young | The Urban Flux

Milton Suggs - Things to Come

Milton Suggs -][- THINGS TO COME (Listen) – [Skiptone Music, 2010]

Incredible work from vocalist Milton Suggs – a jazz singer with a really rich new style! Suggs is unlike anyone else we can think of – but he’s also got a vibe that takes us back to some of our most inspirational singers of the 70s – cats like Mark Murphy, Jon Lucien, Andy Bey, and other one-of-a-kind artists – the kind that blow you away when you first hear them, then keep on holding your ears for years to come! There’s definitely a jazz approach to Milton’s singing, but other righteous elements bubble forth strongly too – and given that most of the music and lyrics were written by Suggs, the record has a deeply personal voice that’s quite different than the usual jazz vocal outing.

The set’s the sort that makes us proud to share a city with a talent this large – and titles include “Fantasy For Two”, “Seize The Moment”, “Not Forgotten”, “We’ll See”, “My Last Goodbye”, “Your Smile”, “Hope”, and “JL’s Blues”. —Dusty Groove America, Inc.

Kurt Elling - THE GATE

Kurt Elling -][- THE GATE – [Concord Jazz, 2011]

The New York Times is one of numerous publications to declare that Kurt Elling is the “standout male vocalist of our time,” and The Gate, Elling’s follow-up to his Grammy-winning Dedicated to You, is among his strongest albums—and perhaps the finest of his career.

Produced by Don Was (Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan), The Gate is a musical collection in which boundaries cease to exist, a sensibility enhanced by producer Don Was, who had expressed the desire to work with Elling—an opportunity which Elling found irresistible.

“I first heard Kurt on the local jazz station and was knocked out by his exotic blend of soul, technique, intelligence and charismatic hipness,” Was recalls. “He made this diverse collection of songs his own—and we had a blast.” Continue reading →

African American, Bobby McFerrin, Jazz, Male Jazz Vocalist

The charismatic vocal style of virtuoso Bobby McFerrin exceeds the limits we usually find in music regardless of genre. His performance here captures the profound sensibilities generated by his predecessors as he is truly one of the greatest jazz vocalist and improvisers of our time. The Voice, his second album as a soloist ranked among the best recordings in the modern era as it served as springboard to sent his career into the hemisphere of stardom. I’m delighted to get re-engaged myself with this classic and take this gem on a weekend spin. —Rob Young | The Urban Flux

Bobby McFerrin - The Voice

Bobby McFerrin -][- The Voice – [Elektra Musician (1984) Nonesuch, 1990]

The vocalist’s 1984 solo album has proven in many ways to be the blueprint for the iconoclastic career to come. Following his more mainstream debut, 1982’s Bobby McFerrin, The Voice is a daring idea: an unaccompanied, live solo vocal album. Although there’s little here that augers the explicit interest in classical music that would later be apparent, The Voice showcases McFerrin’s remarkable vocal abilities, unabashedly optimistic personality, and willingness to take risky ideas to their logical conclusion.

The son of opera singers, McFerrin is grounded in the vocalese style of King Pleasure, Jon Hendricks and Eddie Jefferson, but is only nominally a jazz singer. Rather, his omnivorous interest in music becomes obvious here with covers of James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” Duke Ellington’s “Take the A-Train,” and a medley that manages to incorporate both Charlie Parker’s “Donna Lee” and the Tin Pan Alley standard “We’re in the Money.” As a stylist, McFerrin makes bold use of effects to create a panoply of sounds that stands the notion of pop vocals on its head. —Fred Goodman

Marcus Nance - The Voice Next Door

MARCUS NANCE -//- The Voice Next Door – [Marcus Nance, 2010]

The sultry bass-baritone will surround you with his rich, soulful and powerful voice singing smooth jazz standards such as Summertime, Strange Fruit and Black and Blue as well as a Chopin inspired Nature Boy and an uplifting Ol’ Man River.

My career has been equal parts jazz, cabaret, theatre and opera and I find that I am most satisfied as an artist when I keep my toes in each of these fields. Every style I sing colours the other. My jazz has the richness of opera and my opera has the life, rhythm, and hardship of jazz.

In this recording I wanted to share my love for rich and smooth ballads (My One and Only Love, They Say It’s Wonderful) as well as my experience growing up as a black child in the 1970″s (Black and Blue, Strange Fruit). I also wanted to share the joys of growing up in a religious family and how that has influenced my life (Come Sunday, God Will Provide a Lamb). And last but not least I have added a few theatre songs including Ol’ Man River which has become the most requested song of my career.

I think the most exciting performances are live, so I went at this recording as if I was performing in front of an audience; we did not record line by line and then stick it together. We did each song from beginning to end with everyone in the same room. I wanted a natural and powerful performance… the way music should always be delivered.

I hope you enjoy my debut CD. May it bring you the joy that music has brought me all of my life.
