“I called the great French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and I said ‘So, who’s the new cat? Who’s got the stuff? And he said Zach Brock.” – Stanley Clarke

Zach Brock -][- ALMOST NEVER WAS –Mp3– [Criss Cross Jazz, 2012] –

One of the most virtuosic and emotive voices of contemporary jazz violin, rising star Zach Brock has drawn praise from a wide cohort of fellow musicians and critics for his musical acumen.

Having appeared notably as a sideman with musicians such as Stanley Clarke and Patricia Barber, Brock convenes a world-class rhythm section for his Criss Cross debut (pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland), who inspire him to uncork a series of efflorescent, graceful improvisations on a program of originals and re-imagined standards.

John Ellis, IT'S YOU I LIKE

John Ellis -][- IT’S YOU I LIKE – [Criss Cross, 2012] –

Melody and groove are the watchwords on John Ellis’ masterful Criss Cross debut, which mixes optimistic songs composed by the iconic children’s television host, Fred (a.k.a. ‘Mister’) Rogers, himself a fine jazz pianist, and dark ones by the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith.

Joined by New York A-listers Mike Moreno (guitar), Aaron Goldberg (piano), Matt Penman (bass), and Rodney Green (drums), Ellis – playing mostly tenor saxophone and a bit of bass clarinet – addresses the repertoire with a surefooted time feel, gorgeous tone, and abiding melodicism. -[Amazon | Editorial Reviews]-

SFJAZZ FESTIVAL

San Francisco, CA (PRWE May 05, 2011) In a fitting tribute, nearly 100 years after the birth of the African American music tradition known as “jazz” – a West Coast slang term first used to refer to music in Chicago – SFJAZZ will build the nation’s first free-standing center solely dedicated to the presentation, education and preservation of the art form. On May 6, 2011, SFJAZZ, the largest nonprofit presenter of jazz and world music in America, kicks off the construction of the new SFJAZZ Center with a ceremonial groundbreaking event in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. The SFJAZZ Board of Trustees, donors, musicians and jazz fans alike have already raised over $46 million of the $60 million budgeted to create this state-of-the-art cultural center. Scheduled for completion in 2012 The SFJAZZ Center, designed by renowned architect Mark Cavagnero of Mark Cavagnero Associates, will be a transparent, 35,000-square-foot, freestanding LEED®-compliant structure that will provide artistic and education programs for the community. JAMES FARM

James Farm is a collaborative band featuring saxophonist Joshua Redman, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland. The band uses traditional acoustic jazz quartet instrumentation for its song-based approach to jazz and incorporates the members’ myriad of influences: rock, soul, folk, classical, and electronica, among many others. Nonesuch releases the band’s self-titled debut album on April 26, 2011.

Penman says of the group, “James Farm is where we pool our collective knowledge, let run the best of our ideas arising from our varied musical influences, while acknowledging substantial common ground—a love of jazz, a fascination with song and structure, an obsession with groove, and a receptivity to contemporary influences. A band where we can be creative composers and improvisers, in step with the rhythm of the times, constantly evolving.” Continue reading →
