Dr. Lonnie Smith, THE HEALER

Dr. Lonnie Smith -][- THE HEALER -[Pilgrimage Records, 2012]-

The great B3 organ master and conjurer of sound, Doctor Lonnie Smith, has made some great studio recordings, but he’ll be the first to tell you that his music needs to be experienced live. The release of his brand new live recording The Healer marks the Doctor’s first live recording since his landmark 1970 album Live At Club Mozambique. It showcases the great bandleader reinventing the possibilities of sound along with two young stars – guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Jamire Williams.

The Healer puts the listener front row center at a wild ride of a show that seamlessly blends jazz, fusion, hip hop, world music, and of course the B3 funk that Doc helped create. It also marks the launch of Pilgrimage Records, the good doctor’s new completely artist controlled record label. -[Editorial Review | Amazon]-

On August 28, the acclaimed West African jazz guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke will release Heritage, his dynamic third Blue Note album, which was co-produced by label mate Robert Glasper. The album presents seven new compositions by Loueke, two by Glasper, and one co-written by the two. Glasper also contributes piano and keyboards to six tracks, while singer Gretchen Parlato provides background vocals on two tracks. Continue reading →

Terje Rypdal, ODYSSEY IN STUIDO & IN CONCERT

Terje Rypdal -][- Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert –Mp3– [ECM, 2012] –

Terje Rypdal’s Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert is a very special release. It includes not only the complete Odyssey album (recorded 1975) on CD for the first time (restoring the long track Rolling Stone to its rightful place), but also a full disc of previously unreleased material on which Terje Rypdal’s Odyssey band is augmented by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group in a 1976 live performance of Rypdal s suite Unfinished Highballs. With “MONOSUITE” composer Jürgen Friedrich redefines the marriage of jazz and classical music, his concept is nothing however it’s sheer brilliance to align perfectly the angular symmetry, harmonics and frame the intricacies of these idioms into a chamber of improvisation is simply a masterpiece to behold. –Rob Young | Urban Flux Media

Jürgen Friedrich, Monosuite

Jürgen Friedrich -][- MONOSUITE – (For String Orchestra and Improvisers) –Mp3– [Pirouet, 2012] –

Monosuite – that’s what this fascinating work with its sparkling, shimmering sounds is called – music that bursts out in a powerful, clear tonal stream. The listener is immediately pulled into a maelstrom of undiscovered beauty.

This is music for a 22 piece string orchestra and four masterful soloists from the contemporary world of jazz. These great musicians interact with the Sequenza String Orchestra in lively, elastic, and amazingly organic piece of jazz artistry – inspired music played with creative discipline. -[Pirouet Records]- Continue reading →

Buster Williams, SOMETHING MORE

Buster Williams -][- SOMETHING MORE –Mp3– [In+Out Records, 2011-|-1989] –

. . . What more could you want? This late eighties classic session on the German label In & Out (who also brought us the great and largely unheard band Roots) features Herbie Hancock (piano and keyboards), Wayne Shorter (soprano and tenor sax), Al Foster (drums), and the brilliant (and largely unknown) Japanese trumpeter Shunzo Ohno. With leader Buster Williams, who has played with Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Woody Shaw, and McCoy Tyner, this is a killer band. Somehow, this disc has flown almost completely under the radar. And that’s a shame, given the level of playing consistently on display. Continue reading →

“Joe Alterman has tremendous taste and a passionate respect for swing and space. His touch on the keyboard is reminiscent of pianists from earlier years who listened carefully, felt expressively and actually cared about what the listener heard. Joe is a remarkable swinger and poet.” —Marc Myers, JazzWax.com

Joe Alterman, GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE

Joe Alterman -][- GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE –Mp3– [Miles High Records, 2012] –

Joe Alterman is a jazz pianist whose playing is a joyous throwback to the keyboard stylists of the 1950s. By merging the patient touch of past pianists with his own contemporary sound, Alterman manages to revitalize the familiar, rekindling memories of why you started listening to jazz in the first place.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Joe moved to New York in the fall of 2007 to study music at New York University. He graduated in May of 2012 but is now back to complete his Masters’ degree. While there, he has studied with greats including Don Friedman, Jean Michel-Pilc, Ralph Lalama, Joe Lovano and John Scofield, among others. Continue reading →

“Drummer Da Fonseca perhaps the best Brazilian trap drummer of his generation, plays with an uncommon mix of finesse and drive” – Mark Holston, Jazziz Magazine

Duduka Da Fonseca QUINTET, Jazz Samba – Jazz Exploration

Drummer/Composer Duduka Da Fonseca is a blender, set at high speed. The Brazilian drummer (born in Rio De Janeiro in 1951), who arrived in New York City in 1975, has been actively exploring the perfect marriage and mixture of jazz and samba since forming his first Samba Jazz trio as a precocious 14 year old (a band he called “Bossa Trio”), with brother Miguel on bass. Over the years Da Fonseca has becomea master at combining these seemingly disparate worlds, and has emerged as one of the foremost proponents of the genre. Continue reading →

Masta Conga & his new Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra, LAST ODYSSEY

Masta Conga & his new Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra -][- LAST ODYSSEY -[Ubiquity, 2012] –

Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra’s 2012 album, Last Odyssey, finds the French band in fine form, creating music with Jazz as it’s foundation laced with strains of Ethio and Nigerian Funk combined with Latin Percussion and rhythms.

By taking the heaviest elements from each genre and distilling it down to it’s most potent form, the band’s true identity is revealed and sets them apart from their influences. -[Editorial Review]- Continue reading →

“I revere Duke Ellington, but I didn’t want this to be a reverent album,” Joe Jackson says of The Duke, his new tribute to American jazz giant Ellington.

Joe Jackson, THE DUKE

Joe Jackson -][- THE DUKE –Mp3– [Razor & Tie Label, 2012] –

True to Jackson’s word, The Duke is a decidedly unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his classic compositions while showcasing Jackson’s sublime skills as an arranger, instrumentalist and vocal interpreter. Although it’s only the second time he’s recorded an album not comprised of his own compositions, The Duke is nonetheless a deeply personal project for Jackson, whose longstanding affinity for Ellington’s pioneering spirit has served as a key inspiration throughout his own three-decades-plus career.
