Various Artists - NPR Discover Songs -The New Jazz Divas

The history of women in jazz is well-documented and rightly cherished. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan are some of the most celebrated musical artists of the 20th century. However, there is a contemporary crop of female artists blazing a new trail and creating a history all their own.

On the first installment of NPR’s Discover Songs Series, “the new jazz divas” take center stage. While they certainly owe a debt to the women who came before, the artists featured on this compilation are some of the best and most interesting talents in jazz today. From the unmistakable vocals of Madeleine Peyroux and Diana Krall to the singular piano styles of Eliane Elias and Patricia Barber – the legacy of great jazz divas is in very capable hands.
