Grace Kelly, Live at Scullers

“It’s a blessing from the gods, this kind of talent, and when we see it in someone young, we marvel at the contrast…” – Todd Leopold, CNN

::: Stream Tracks From Live at Scullers :::

There are snapshots in the family photo album of Grace Kelly at Scullers Jazz Club at the age of six, falling asleep in her father’s arms. When she began studying saxophone at the tender age of ten, she dreamed of one day performing on that very same stage. In those childhood visions, it was a much older Grace Kelly that she envisioned on the bandstand, but she made her Scullers debut at thirteen and held a CD release concert there the following year. Since hearing virtuoso Bill O’Connell perform with flutist Dave Valentin I’ve been a fan, he is arguably a diamond in the ruff and one of the best pianist in the Latin Jazz idiom. –Rob Young | Urban Flux Media

Bill O’Connell, TRIPLE PLAY PLUS THREE

Bill O’Connell -][- TRIPLE PLAY PLUS THREE –Mp3– [ZOHO Music, 2011] –

New York Latin Jazz pianist Bill O’Connell’s “Triple Play Plus Three” is an innovative spin on the traditional jazz trio format, featuring percussionist Richie Flores and a rotating cast of celebrity guests – all multiple GRAMMY winners – clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera, vibraphonist Dave Samuels, and flutist Dave Valentin.

“Triple Play Plus Three” presents eight lively, virtuosic O’Connell originals, plus two 20th century classics by Thelonius Monk (‘Round Midnight”) and Kurt Weill (“Speak Low”).

Thelonious Monk‘s signature composition ‘Round Midnight, has been totally re-harmonized by O’Connell. Paquito D‘Rivera‘s sweet-toned clarinet work is the perfect complement to O’Connell’s lush chords. -[Excerpt | ZOHO Music]-

Conrad Herwig -][- Another Kind of Blue: Latin Side of Miles Davis – [Halfnote Records, 2004]

With Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles Davis, trombonist Conrad Herwig reimagines one of the seminal albums in jazz history – timeless compositions crafted and showcased within the framework of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. It is a companion piece to his pathfinding release, The Latin Side of John Coltrane, and it finds him reveling in the company of featured bandmates who draw inspiration and energy from the spirit of Miles.

Selections include the entire Kind of Blue repertoire – including “So What,” Freddie Freeloader,” and “All Blues” – plus bonus track “Petits Machins” from Miles’s Filles De Kilimanjaro. Group members include Mario Rivera, Edsel Gomez, John Benitez, Robby Ameen, and Richie Flores. –Product Description | Amazon.com

When it comes to creative liaisons, Paquito D’Rivera has few peers in the breadth and range of his musical interests, collaborations, and restless curiosity. But even by his stylistically expansive track record, D’Rivera’s new album “Panamericana Suite” is an extraordinary musical journey for one of jazz’s most acclaimed and popular artists.

Paquito D'Rivera - Panamericana Suite

Paquito D’Rivera -][- Panamericana Suite – [MCG Jazz, 2010]

Few jazz artists have been as musically omnivorous—and dazzingly accomplished—as the Cuban-born alto saxophone and clarinet virtuoso Paquito D’Rivera. Equally at home performing bebop, tango, and classical as well as Afro-Cuban styles, D’Rivera displays his mastery of many genres on his new CD, “Panamericana Suite,” which will be released by the MCG Jazz label on November 2.

Recorded live at Pittsburgh’s Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild for MCG Jazz in April 2008, “Panamericana Suite” takes its name from a piece commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center that D’Rivera premiered in 2000. A stunning cultural synthesis encompassing North, Central, and South America leavened with a Caribbean rhythmic sensibility, the project reflects D’Rivera’s embracing musical vision.

“I am an eclectic person,” D’Rivera says. “I grew up the son of a classical saxophone player who loved jazz. He loved to put on Heifetz and Mario Lanza, and then listen to Benny Goodman and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Growing up in Havana, Latin American music was in the air.” Continue reading →
