Charlie Haden with Paul Motian, Geri Allen -][- ETUDES –Mp3– [Soul Note, 1988]

Three of the most sensitive musicians known to the world of jazz have collaborated to make an album that sparkles with creative energy and intuitive sensitivities. From the wonderful rendition of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” to some of the lesser known titles, all are done with a high level of expertise and a masterful brilliance. A beautiful album through and through. -[Customer Review | Amazon]-

Russ Lossing, Drum Music – Music-of- Paul-motian

The music of the legendary drummer/composer Paul Motian has inspired generations of open-minded musicians. Motian’s singular compositional and percussive voices shaped the world of jazz for over 50 years. Unfortunately, Motian passed away in November 2011, an iconic figure silenced.

Like so many musicians, pianist and composer Russ Lossing found inspiration in Motian’s accomplishments and collaboration. His new release Drum Music was recorded as a tribute to Motian, both as a musician and a friend. Lossing recorded ten of Motian’s original compositions on the occasion of the drummer’s 80th birthday (March 25, 2011). The release has since been turned into a tribute to the master. Corea, Gomez and Motian, Further Explorations

Corea, Gomez & Motian -][- Further Explorations -(MP3)- [Concord Jazz, 2012]

Produced by Corea, Further Explorations was recorded May 4-17, 2010, live at the Blue Note in New York City. (2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Evans’ original Explorations LP with Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro on the Riverside label.) In preparation, Corea, Gomez and Motian examined the entire Bill Evans discography. Rather than approach the music as a tribute, his material provides more of a template. Each musician also contributes original material. The results are inspired, as this elevated piano trio plays with near-telepathic empathy and a remarkable blend of ingenuity and emotional depth. Brad Mehldau, Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden - LIVE at BIRDLAND

Brad Mehldau, Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden ]|[ LIVE at BIRDLAND – [ECM Records, 2011]

A quartet of master musicians and a program of jazz classics. Live At Birdland presents the finest moments from two inspired nights at New York’s legendary club, as Konitz, Mehldau, Haden and Motian play “Loverman”, “Lullaby Of Birdland”, “Solar”, “I Fall In Love Too Easily”, “You Stepped Out Of A Dream” and “Oleo” with freedom, tenderness, and a love of melody that only jazz’s greatest improvisers can propose. On this live recording from New York’s legendary club, an ensemble of history-making players dives into the music without a set list. Four exceptional jazz musicians -Lee Konitz, Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian – approach the standards from new perspectives and unusual angles. They play them with freedom, tenderness and a melodic and rhythmic understanding found only amongst jazz’s greatest improvisers.

The recording was made at Birdland and mixed by Manfred Eicher and the quartet, with James Farber as engineer, at New York’s Avatar Studios. Songs selected by this team from the performances of December 9 and 10, 2009, are: “Lover Man”, “Lullaby Of Birdland”, “Solar”, “I Fall In Love Too Easily”, “You Stepped Out Of A Dream” and “Oleo”. Konitz has often said that he tries to play the material as if encountering it for the first time. With all four musicians listening intently, discoveries are continually made in the music. Geri Allen & Timeline - Live

Geri Allen & Timeline -|- Live (Dig) – [Motema Music, 2010]

This incendiary group gains standing ovations with their unique act that speaks the language of tap, drumming, and the street within the totally embracing context of Allen’s deep in-the-pocket, groove-oriented jazz. Allen is one of the most respected pianists of her generation, with scans of over 36,000 units as a leader. * Geri Allen and her youthful group TIMELINE stand at the leading edge of a current, hip trend to include tap in jazz performances. Tap percussionist Maurice Chestnut, a protégé of tap icon Savion Glover, proves himself to be one of the most innovative practitioners of his discipline, and a musician of the highest order.
