Stanley Cowell, IT’S TIME

Stanley Cowell -][- IT’S TIME –Mp3– [SteepleChase, 2012]

An excellent modern, mainstream pianist who is adaptable to many acoustic jazz settings, Stanley Cowell has long been underrated except among knowing musicians. He studied the piano from the time he was four, and Art Tatum made an early impact. After attending Oberlin College Conservatory and the University of Michigan, Cowell (who had played with Rahsaan Roland Kirk while at Oberlin) moved to New York in 1966. He played regularly with Marion Brown (1966-1967), Max Roach (1967-1970), and the Bobby Hutcherson-Harold Land quintet (1968-1971).

In the early ’70s, Cowell worked in Music Inc. with Charles Tolliver, and they co-founded the label Strata East. He played regularly with the Heath Brothers during 1974-1983, and since 1981 has been a busy jazz educator. Cowell has recorded as a leader for Arista-Freedom (1969), ECM (1972), Strata East, Galaxy, Unisson, DIW, Concord, and SteepleChase. –[::: iTunes.apple.com | Biography :::]–

Stephen Scott, SOMETHING TO CONSIDER [2013]

Stephen Scott -][- SOMETHING TO CONSIDER –Mp3– [Verve Records, 2013] –

“When I play, I’m told I’m very intense,” Verve pianist Stephen Scott said recently. “That’s because I’m not out there to gimmick or show off technique. I’m playing to get to the meat of the music. To be honest. That’s what Betty Carter always told me, ‘be honest’.”

Clear acknowledgement of his promise, his honesty, his awakening genius, Aminah’s Dream continues the brilliance. As with Something to Consider, released in ’91, Scott wrote the majority of the compositions for this recording. Eventually a trio date (augmented by horns) Aminah’s Dream features the eternal duo, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Elvin Jones. Called upon to lend their knowledge, power and support, Scott admits, “In writing the music for this date, I had them in mind.” The admiration is mutual – when they finished the session, Jones was so impressed he said, “I’d love to take him (Scott) home with me!” Continue reading →

Phillippe Saisse, DORIAN’S FIRST CHRISTMAS

Philippe Saisse -][- Dorian’s First Christmas –Mp3– [Dorian 2000 Music, 2012]

No other Christmas celebration will ever have as big an impact on our family as Christmas 2004. Its particular significance was due to the fact that it was the first that our son Dorian really became aware of Santa Claus, making the list, checking it twice, mailing it.

The look on his face come Christmas morning was out of this world: his expression of total disbelief at the sight of all the gifts he had on his list was truly something that no other Holiday Season will ever inspire. We will never see that look of utter bewilderment. That moment was so moving that I strolled down to my studio (which in those days was in the basement of our house) and started playing the piano, tunes inspired by the feeling of Christmas as seen through our son’s eyes. Jurek Jagoda Trio -][- SONGS WITHOUT WORDS –Mp3– [SOU Productions, 2012]

The trio consists of the pianist Jurek Jagoda, Marek Alaszewski Jr. on double bass/bass and Pawel Gebicki on drums. In 2010 the band burst onto the polish music scene with the first album “Songs Without Words“. The project features 12 compelling songs composed by Jagoda and as title of the album suggests this music is constructed around tunes. Over one hour of mood music and colourful melodies. The album gets optimistic reviews (polish music magazines, internet blogs, radio stations) and was noticed by the world renowned jazz critic Stuart Nicholson, who chose this record to the top ten in the ranking “Albums Of The Year 2010” of the greatest British jazz magazine Jazzwise. Kenny Barron -][- SWAMP SALLY –Mp3– [Verve, 2012]

This album is quite unique and it deserves your attention even if unfortunately it is out of print actually. Well, if you find it used, you can buy it with confidence. It has been recorded in 1995 and it’s not a common Jazz album with piano, double bass and drums. Here you have the fantastic Kenny Barron at the piano obviously, but he plays keyboards and double bass too and the incredible Mino Cinelu who plays a lot of different instruments (mandolin, banjo, guitar, keys, drums, percussions, additional sounds effects … and he sings too in a couple of tune). It is a collaboration of these two artists exclusively. The result is a very strange album, very entertaining and incredibly well played and written. The world of this album is surely Jazz, but there a lot of different flavours inside that take the music here and there. -[Excerpt: Jazzcat | Customer Review | Amazon]-

Pamela York, Lay Down This World – Hymns and Spirituals

Pamela York -][- Lay Down This World: Hymns and Spirituals –Mp3– [Jazzful Heart, 2012]

Now in 2012, Pamela offers the listener an exciting journey with Lay Down This World: Hymns and Spirituals, a beautiful collection of sacred music which precedes the 20th century. Each melody has been reharmonized and reinvented into a modern context. Whether playing the ancient Celtic melody of “Be Thou My Vision,” Martin Luther’s famous Reformation hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” or the moving spiritual, “Deep River,” Pamela creates an atmosphere that is sometimes reflective, sometimes rousing, but always breathtaking. Using her tradition as a jazz pianist she tackles these traditional songs with imagination and conviction, proving her salt as a skilled arranger who can inventively breathe new life into these timeless traditionals.
