PORTLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL TAKES ON NEW LOOK FOR 2012 AS “US BANK PORTLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY ALASKA AIRLINES”

TWO MAJOR CORPORATE SPONSORS CREATIVELY EXCHANGE ROLES TO PROVIDE INCREASED SUPPORT FOR JAZZ FESTIVAL

It was announced today that effective with next year’s Portland Jazz Festival, PDX Jazz (the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival) has named U.S. Bank as the official title sponsor and Alaska Airlines as the event’s presenting sponsor. The U.S. Bank Portland Jazz Festival Presented by Alaska Airlines is scheduled for February 17 through February 26, 2012.

The Portland Jazz Festival is an annual, multi-venue series of jazz events presented each February within the downtown area of Portland, Oregon. The Festival is dedicated to presenting internationally recognized, contemporary jazz masters; showcasing local jazz musicians within intimate, free performances; and celebrating February as Black History Month with a series of jazz education and outreach programs that extend into Portland’s schools and neighborhoods. Community Service and Church Partners Who Support Live Jazz

The 2011 Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air Portland Jazz Festival Presented by U.S. Bank boasts over 125 shows and covering a 20 day period, is set to commence Friday, February 18 through Sunday, February 27. In addition to headline attractions performing inside the PCPA at the Newmark and Winningstad Theatre’s, The Crystal Ballroom and The Alberta Rose Theatre, this year’s 8th annual festival has partnered with 21 multi-cultural venues all across the city in support of this year’s theme: Bridges and Boundaries: Jewish & African Americans Playing Jazz.

Hotel partners featuring live jazz include: The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel, Benson Hotel, Heathman Hotel, Hotel Fifty, Nel Centro at the Hotel Modera, Hotel Monaco, Red Lion Portland Convention Center and The Riverplace Hotel.

Club settings include: The Art Bar, Blue Monk, Brasserie Montmartre, Tony Starlight’s and Wilf’s.

Featured Concerts Including Pharoah Sanders, Mingus Big Band, Luciana Souza, Dave Holland, and Three Acclaimed Groups From Norway

Panel Discussions, Jazz Conversations, Middle School Educational Outreach, Late-Night Jam Sessions
and Local Performances Complemented This Year’s Innovative Festival Programming

Devin Phillips, the young saxophonist who evacuated Hurricane Katrina with the NOLA2PDX program in 2005, took the stage at the Newmark Theater and showed the audience in his adopted hometown that he has the chops to share the stage with the legendary Pharoah Sanders, who welcomed him with open arms. At one point Phillips introduced Pharoah as “my idol”. It was a fitting moment for a festival that encourages the development of young players and Portland jazz musicians.

Portland Jazz Festival

Since 2004 the Portland Jazz Festival has brought world class jazz to the Rose City, showcasing iconic jazz performers from across the world. From February 21st-28th, the Portland Jazz Festival will fill up venues throughout Portland providing more than 20,000 people with more than 75 unique jazz events.

In honor of the Seventh Annual Portland Jazz Festival, Rogue Ales has released its seventh limited edition bottle of Jazz Guy Ale which previously featured artistic renditions of jazz performers including a pianist, guitarist, bass player, saxophonist and trumpet player. This year however, Rogue decided that the Jazz Guy Ale bottle will celebrate a living Rogue and Portland’s own jazz guy, Bill Royston. Continue reading →
