Saxophonist and composer Ravi Coltrane will release his debut album for Blue Note Records, entitled Spirit Fiction, on June 19. The album features two different band lineups including Coltrane’s long-term quartet with pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Drew Gress and drummer E.J. Strickland as well as a quintet featuring trumpeter Ralph Alessi, pianist Geri Allen, bassist James Genus and drummer Eric Harland.

Coltrane’s label mate and fellow saxophonist Joe Lovano served as co-producer of the album along with Coltrane. “I’ve always produced my own recordings except for the first one, Moving Pictures, which was produced by Steve Coleman,” says Coltrane. “Joe was a truly supportive producer on this project. He has been an important figure in my life for over 20 years.” Lovano also plays alongside Coltrane and Allen on a rendition of Paul Motian’s “Fantasm” as well as a version of Ornette Coleman’s “Check Out Time.” Spirit Fiction also includes six original compositions by Coltrane and three by Alessi. NEW CASSANDRA WILSON ALBUM, “SILVER PONY,” SET FOR RELEASE NOVEMBER 9 ON BLUE NOTE RECORDS; FEATURING SPECIAL GUESTS RAVI COLTRANE & JOHN LEGEND

Cassandra Wilson - Silver Pony (Blue Note Records, 2010)

Silver Pony, the stunning new album from multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz-pop chanteuse Cassandra Wilson, will be released by EMI’s Blue Note Records on November 9. Wilson, whose remarkable, husky-tinged vibrato has created a trademark sound for her as an artist, will be touring worldwide in support of the release which features special guests saxophonist Ravi Coltrane (“Silver Moon”) and R&B singer-songwriter John Legend (“Watch The Sunrise”).

A unique hybrid live/studio album, Silver Pony moves seamlessly between live recordings from a European tour and studio recordings laid down at New Orleans’ Piety Street Studios. The album features a mix of jazz/pop classics as well as songs newly-written by Cassandra and her band.

Silver Pony draws its title from an experience which Cassandra had as a child and which left an indelible mark in her memory bank, and thus on her career itself. “A man came around my neighborhood in Jackson, Mississippi, with a pony and camera,” she recalls. “You could pay to get your picture taken.” Her brothers declined, but Cassandra was eager. Her mother hesitated-“there were certain things young ladies just didn’t do,” Wilson adds. Continue reading →

Ravi Coltrane

EMI’s Blue Note Records is proud to announce the signing of saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Ravi Coltrane. Coltrane will be entering the studio in December to record his debut as a leader for the label, which is due to be released in Spring 2011. Coltrane has previously recorded for the label as a member of The Blue Note 7, the all-star septet that released the album Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records and embarked on an extensive North American tour in honor of the label’s 70th anniversary in 2009.

This Fall, Coltrane will be going out on a short run of U.S. tour dates with his quartet to prepare material for the new recording, including engagements at the Village Vanguard in New York (Sept. 21-26), Yoshi’s in Oakland (Dec. 3-5), The Dakota in Minneapolis (Dec. 6-7), and the Jazz Showcase in Chicago (Dec. 9-12). In addition to a European tour with the Saxophone Summit in November, Coltrane will also be heading to London this month where he will be doing a BBC Radio 1 session and performing at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts with his cousin, the experimental hip-hop and electronic music producer Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison), on whose acclaimed new album Cosmogramma Coltrane also appears. Flux Music Essentials … [Childs, Coltrane, Hiromi, e.s.t. & Ritenour]

Flux Music Essentials

Whass up jazzy people, it’s great to be back in the groove with a few more titles from the shelves of Flux Music Essentials … on today, I’ve got one of my favorite pianist Billy Childs and his Grammy Winning masterpiece titled “Lyric.” As you know, fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane stirs up the pot with the infallible “In Flux” his 2005 project. A fascinating pianist/keyboardist from Japan named Hiromi rips the eighty-eights like nobodies business on her mind numbing release “Time Control.” Europeans jazz enthusiast sorely misses one of the finest innovative pianist in the world named Esbjörn Svensson and his Trio release “Viaticum.” Finally, a gentleman who’s synonymous when it comes to modern guitar Lee Ritenour and his 1993 tribute – “We Bound” on GRP Records to the most influential guitarist in the world Wes Montgomery.

Billy Childs Ensemble - Lyric

Billy Childs Ensemble | Lyric (Jazz Chamber Music Vol-1) – [Lunacy Music/ArtistShare, 2002]

After about two decades of releases as a leader, Billy Childs continues to produce cutting edge performances of his compositions and arrangements at the highest level of musicianship. This latest recording is his most solid work as a leader. It is worth a listen for anyone who is interested in serious music with lyric qualities.

For the past several years, Billy has not released any CDs with himself as a leader that primarily feature his own compositions, but “In Carson’s Eyes” gets things off to a hypnotically beautiful start by telling a musical story that is full of brilliant intricacies. “Goodbye, Friend” and “Prelude in Bb Major” both demonstrate his uncanny ability to move effortlessly between classical music and jazz while at times seeming to give a nod of acknowledgement to Pat Metheny. “Into the Light” is a Grammy Award winning composition that demonstrates a torrent of virtuosity and unpredictable intensity that would be worthy of an artist whose skill reminds the listener of Chick Corea without sounding like Chick Corea in any way. Ravi Coltrane | Mad 6 – [Sony, 2002]

Ravi Coltrane, Mad 6

Ravi Coltrane, Mad 6

A saxophonist whose patiently evolving style has been one of the more interesting stories in contemporary jazz, Ravi Coltrane helps launch Columbia’s Eighty-Eights subsidiary (founded by Japanese producer Yasohachi “88” Itoh) with a set that is by turns more freewheeling and lyrical than his previous major label efforts. Featuring two bands–one with George Colligan on piano and the other Andy Milne–Mad 6 reflects Ravi’s involvement in both jazz classicism and the throbbing, funkified bop of Brooklyn’s M-Base school. His tenor has never plumbed richer emotion than it does on Thelonious Monk’s “Ask Me Now,” while the forcefully minimalistic “Avignon” is one of his more compelling originals.

Bracketed by two lesser-played tunes by his legendary father, John Coltrane, the album could have done without yet another version of Monk’s “Round Midnight.” But with Ravi whizzing through the changes on soprano over Steve Hass’ gutbucket drumming, it’s a nifty remake by an artist who seems incapable of taking anything at face value. —Lloyd Sachs

Tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane has put the finishing touches on his long-awaited new recording “BLENDING TIMES” which is set for release on the Savoy Jazz label on January 13th. The follow up to the Grammy-nominated “In Flux” (a recording Ben Ratliff of the New York Times placed at #3 on his Top Ten Jazz Recordings of 2005), Coltrane again performs primarily with his stellar quartet consisting of Luis Perdomo on piano, Drew Gress on bass and E.J. Strickland on drums. He also invited special guests Charlie Haden and harpist Brandee Younger to perform for a poignant turn as a trio. In addition, Coltrane will be a featured performer in the Blue Note 7—a touring septet which will embark on a 51 date tour of concert halls in 50 cities beginning in January to celebrate Blue Note’s 70th Anniversary.
