Buster Williams, SOMETHING MORE

Buster Williams -][- SOMETHING MORE –Mp3– [In+Out Records, 2011-|-1989] –

. . . What more could you want? This late eighties classic session on the German label In & Out (who also brought us the great and largely unheard band Roots) features Herbie Hancock (piano and keyboards), Wayne Shorter (soprano and tenor sax), Al Foster (drums), and the brilliant (and largely unknown) Japanese trumpeter Shunzo Ohno. With leader Buster Williams, who has played with Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Woody Shaw, and McCoy Tyner, this is a killer band. Somehow, this disc has flown almost completely under the radar. And that’s a shame, given the level of playing consistently on display. Continue reading →

Sonny Rollins

At a short ceremony at the White House today, President Barack Obama presented 20 people with the 2010 National Medal of Arts or the National Humanities Medal. The Arts honorees included Sonny Rollins, the venerated saxophonist, and Quincy Jones, the composer/arranger/producer whose musical roots in jazz are deep.

The National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the United States Government.

Qunicy Jones

After brief remarks, during which President Obama mentioned that he once owned Sonny Rollins albums on vinyl, Obama presented each award individually, while a short prepared statement was read. Here are the statements for Jones and Rollins:Quincy Jones for his extraordinary contributions to American music as a musician, composer, record producer, and arranger. As a master inventor of musical hybrids, he has mixed pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical, African, and Brazilian music into many dazzling fusions, traversing virtually every medium, including records, live performances, movies, and television.

Sonny Rollins for his contributions to American jazz music. Widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the post-bebop era, Mr. Rollins’ melodic sensibilities, playing style, and solos have delighted audiences and influenced generations of musicians for over 50 years.

In a statement issued in a press release yesterday, Rollins said, “I’m very happy that jazz, the greatest American music, is being recognized through this honor, and I’m grateful to accept this award on behalf of the gods of our music.”

Sonny Rollins - Definitive Sonny Rollins

The Definitive Sonny Rollins on Prestige, Riverside and Contemporary comes out a few weeks ahead of Rollins’ 80th birthday on September 7, 2010. This Sonny Rollins set covers almost an entire decade, from a December 1951 session in New York for Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet to an October 1958 session in Los Angeles for Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders.

“That was such a significant period in the development of jazz in general, and Sonny Rollins was at the heart of all that was going on during that decade,” says Nick Phillips, Concord Music Group’s Vice President of Jazz and Catalog A&R and the producer of the Definitive series. “Just look at the Miles Davis session where he recorded `Airegin,’ `Doxy’ and `Oleo,’ for example. Those are all tunes that he penned, and all remain indelible jazz standards. That’s a whole lot of jazz history that was made on just a single day in the summer of 1954.” Continue reading →

Tom Rizzo -][- Imaginary Numbers – [Origin Records, 2010]

Through the richly textured arrangements of longtime collaborator Nick Lane and a stellar new ensemble of some of LA’s finest, veteran guitarist and composer Tom Rizzo creates a swinging and wide-ranging new recording of interesting standards and provocative originals. The top-flight band, including Joe La Barbera, Bob Sheppard & Bob Summers, digs deep on the swinging original opener “B-Like,” paints a lush landscape on the gorgeous J.J. Johnson classic “Lament,” and roasts on the dynamic arrangement of Sonny Rollins‘ “Oleo.”

By supplementing the “Birth of the Cool” instrumentation on Imaginary Numbers with his sleek guitar work, Rizzo adds a twist to that classic ensemble sound and contributes a worthy modern gem to Los Angeles‘ recorded jazz heritage.

Produced by Tom Rizzo & Rick Simpson

Sonny Rollins | Plus 4 – [Prestige/OJC, 1956]

Sonny Rollins - Plus 4

A crackling bit of hardbop from Sonny Rollins — and a session that has Sonny playing with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown group that included Bud Powell’s brother Richie on piano!

Sonny had already made a strong name for himself on albums issued under the Roach/Brown tag at the time, and here the group returns the favor by allowing Sonny to lead, and by giving him a good deal of time in the spotlight! Rollins’ solo ability is risen to a razor-sharp level for the set — really getting fire, and managing to invent at a speed and sharpness that’s simply amazing.

Titles include Sonny’s classic reading of “Pent-up House”, plus “Valse Hot”, “Kiss & Run”, and “Count Your Blessings”.

24-BIT REMASTERING BRINGS NEW CLARITY AND DEPTH TO CLASSIC RECORDINGS

FIRST FIVE TITLES SET FOR RELEASE ON MARCH 30, 2010

In the tradition of its highly lauded Rudy Van Gelder Remasters Series of classic Prestige recordings, Concord Music Group has dug into the vaults once again to create a new series of jazz reissues. The Original Jazz Classics Remasters series, scheduled for launch on March 30, showcases some of the most pivotal recordings of the past several decades by artists whose influence on the jazz tradition is beyond measure.

The first five titles in the series are:

Dave Brubeck Quartet: Jazz at Oberlin
Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section
Sonny Rollins: Way Out West
Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane
Joe Pass: Virtuoso

An extension of the popular Original Jazz Classics series (est. 1982), the new OJC Remasters releases reveal the sonic benefits of 24-bit remastering-a technology that didn’t exist when these titles were originally issued on compact disc. The addition of newly-written liner notes further enhances the illuminating quality of the OJC Remasters reissues. “Each of the recordings in this series is an all-time jazz classic,” says Nick Phillips, Vice President of Jazz and Catalog A&R at Concord Music Group and producer of the series. “With these reissues, we get a fresh look and a new perspective on these artists and some of their most important work-not only from the meticulous 24-bit remastering by Joe Tarantino, but also from the insights we glean from the new liner notes that have been written for each title in the series.” Continue reading →
