Michal Urbaniak, FUSION III

Michal Urbaniak -][ FUSION III –Mp3– [Ubx Records, 2008] –

Very engaging and funky fusion disc from 1975, featuring not only Urbaniak’s soaring gypsy drenched violin but also the other-worldly vocalese of his then-wife Ursula Dudziak (quite an original vocal artist in her own right).

The songs combine a lot of playfully twisty be-bop like melody lines with rip-snorting funk, chiming electric pianos and fiery rock sensibilities, particularly the searing guitars of John Abercrombie (check out the spine-chilling solo on “Metroliner”) and Larry Coryell (who seriously rocks out on “Bloody Kishka”). plus a killer rhythm section of bassist Anthony Jackson with drummers Steve Gadd and Gerry Brown. -[Excerpt | Customer Review | Amazon]-

“Marika Groove” is a twelve-minute instrumental tour-de-force by Chick Corea written for virtuoso marimba soloist Mika Yoshida and Grammy®-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. Drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Eddie Gomez join Yoshida and Stoltzman to capture Corea’s composition in a sprawling, ebullient track featuring finely-honed instrumental interplay, muscular rhythmic structures, and ceaselessly inventive melodies, which Yoshida delivers with her signature inspiration and aplomb. The track was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York NY, engineered by Jay Messina and produced by Gadd and Yoshika. Continue reading →

Steve Gadd and Friends -][- LIVE at VOCE – [VARESE FONTANA, 2010]

Steve Gadd is one of the most influential drummers of all time. Currently on tour with Eric Clapton, Live at Voce is the first album released under his own name in over a decade. The album features legendary Jazz musicians Ronnie Cuber, Paul Bollenback and Joey DeFrancesco and includes two unreleased bonus, studio tracks with Edie Brickell.

Stephen Kendall Gadd (born April 9, 1945 in Rochester, New York) is an American session and studio drummer, notable for his work with Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, Joe Cocker, Stuff, Bob James, Chick Corea, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Eddie Gomez, The Manhattan Transfer, Michal Urbaniak, Steps Ahead, Al Di Meola, Manhattan Jazz Quintet, Richard Tee, Jon Bon Jovi, and many others.

Gadd is a native of Irondequoit, a suburb of Rochester, NY. When he was seven years old, his uncle, who was a drummer in the US army, encouraged him to take drum lessons. Gadd became so talented at the drums that by the age of eleven he had sat in with Dizzy Gillespie. Continue reading →
