KENDRICK SCOTT ORACLE – CONVICTION

Kendrick Scott ORACLE -][- CONVICTION – [Concord Jazz, 2013]

With the 2007 release of The Source – his debut recording as a leader – drummer and composer Kendrick Scott established a reputation right out of the gate as an explorer, someone with a generous measure of wisdom and insight to counterbalance his youth and newcomer status.

Nearly six years later, Scott and his band continue to dig beneath the surface to find the deeper truths in Conviction, their new CD scheduled for release on Concord Jazz on March 26, 2013 (international release dates may vary). As the title suggests, Conviction is the vehicle by which Kendrick and company look past the mundane and examine the motivating forces that propel us through life, even in those times when the greater truths are obscured by the tedium of the everyday. Featured Album of the Week

Greetings jazz enthusiasts, I’m delighted to spotlight one of the brightest and invigorating voices in modern jazz … pianist/composer Taylor Eigsti. In fact, it seemed not long ago he was considered a prodigy and virtuoso … although he’s undoubtedly worthy of these accolades Eigsti is unafraid to express himself through a body of work that encompasses seasoned textures that are riveting, challenging and vibrant from a perspective of a young yet forward thinking artist. As you see, I’m excited Taylor Eigsti return with his fascinating excursion into new project territory on Concord Jazz appropriately titled Daylight at Midnight as our “Featured Album of The Week” at The Urban Flux. —Rob Young

Taylor Eigsti - Daylight at Midnight

Taylor Eigsti -][- Daylight at Midnight – [Concord Records, 2010]

Concord Jazz is proud to announce the release of Daylight at Midnight, the newest album from the pianist/composer Taylor Eigsti. This innovative collection includes original Eigsti compositions, as well as other remarkable musical renditions by composers such as Nick Drake, Imogen Heap, Elliot Smith and Rufus Wainwright. The 11-track collection marks Eigsti’s third Concord Jazz release.

On Daylight at Midnight, Eigsti continues to challenge the norms of what constitutes jazz today. While Eigsti pays full respect to the jazz tradition, he also exercises his passion for melodies of esteemed songwriters from his generation and explores a variety of music that piques his curiosity. In this collection, he not only finds resonance in the aforementioned top-tier, pop-oriented composers… but also brings to light a doubleheader of personal revelation: 20th-century Catalonian classical pianist Federico Mompou and up-and-coming vocalist/songwriter Becca Stevens, who sings five of the 11 tunes and adds her own flavors of the ukulele and charango. As fitting for an adventurous repertoire, the young pianist augments his unique and lyrical style with the Fender Rhodes, Rhodes PianoBass, Wurlitzer electric piano and Mellotron samples to add color and texture to the tunes. Flux Music Essentials

Hello jazz enthusiasts, welcome back for another tasty brew of some of the absolute finest jazz available from the shelves of “Flux Music Essentials.” In the mix this week, I’ve conjured up another diverse palette of music featuring vocalist Cassandra Wilson, Brazil’s finest Azymuth, saxophonists Myron Walden, pianist Taylor Eigsti and violinist Andrei Matorin. Hopefully, during your travels you’ve met these excellent recordings along the way.

Cassandra Wilson - New Moon Daughter

Cassandra Wilson -|- New Moon Daughter – [Blue Note, 1996]

Without a doubt New Moon Daughter is my favorite Cassandra Wilson album. Not to say that the others weren’t also excellent. They definitely were. I still listen to Blue Night til Dawn and Traveling Miles regularly. But New Moon Daughter is something else entirely. It’s not that New Moon is totally different than any other Cassandra Wilson album. It contains no less than five cover songs which are all excellent. Especially the quietly powerful strange fruit. She really adds another dimension to that song. Her version of love is blindness is just as spellbinding as u2 original. I’m so lonesome I could cry is as heartbreaking as any other version that I’ve heard. And her rendition of The Last Train to Clarksville makes you forget that a group called the Monkees ever made such as song. And her version of harvest moon blew me away. But the true strength in New Moon Daughter are the original songs. Of those my favorites are Solomons song and until, both songs are sung with an almost lovers intimacy. It feels as if she singing to you. Overall an excellent album that will please most if not all fans of Cassandra’s Wilson’s music. –-Amazon.com Continue reading →

Taylor Eigsti, Let It Come to You

Taylor Eigsti | "Let It Come to You"

At the mere age of twenty-three this young and gifted pianist-composer-band leader Taylor Eigsti has been truly blessed with tons of accolades and frankly deservingly so since his Concord Records debut “Lucky To Be Me.” In 2008, he explores new frontiers in jazz by leaping forward into the future with his compelling sophomore release titled “Let It Come To You” produced by Eigsti and Chris Dunn.

As an artist, it always helps to surround oneself by a wealth of talent whether playing live or recording in the studio. On this gathering, Taylor calls his working ensemble lead by guitarist and collaborator Julian Lage, Reuben Rogers on bass and Eric Harland on drums with such special guests Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone, and Edmar Castaneda on Colombian harp are primary torch barriers on this session to invoke their enormous skill set into these 11 wonderfully played and arranged original and reinvented standard(s) compositions.

Grammy nominated piano wunderkind Taylor Eigsti presents “Let It Come To You,” his new CD of impressive original compositions and imaginatively refreshed standards ranging from Cole Porter to the Eels. This is truly a dazzling display of artistry on the keys that is not to be missed! With this, his sophomore outing, and follow-up release to his 2006 breakout debut CD, Lucky to Be Me, for Concord Records, Eigsti says that this now is “the record that I’ve always wanted to make.” Indeed, Let It Come to You reveals Eigsti as an adventurous artist who, while steeped in jazz tradition, is also committed to advancing it. As he writes in the CD’s liner notes, his compositions “provide a glimpse of the new type of music that I am currently gravitating toward and convey the emotional concepts behind their inspiration.” – Amazon.com
