The Cookers - Cast The First Stone

Billy Harper (Tenor Sax), Eddie Henderson (Trumpet), David Weiss (Trumpet), Craig Handy (Alto Sax), George Cables (Piano), Cecil McBee (Bass), Billy Hart (Drums) & Special guest Azar Lawrence (Tenor & Soprano Sax)

Experience counts, especially in jazz. The more time musicians spend interpreting tunes and interacting with others, the more articulation an audience can expect. You can hear the fruits of such work in the expressive language the Cookers bring to the material on Cast the First Stone. Here’s a group of veteran improvisers approaching their current songbook with both ardor and eloquence.

Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, and Billy Hart all came up in the heady era of the mid ’60s. It was a period that found the dimensions of hard bop morphing from their original designs, and each these guys helped facilitate the process. David Weiss and Craig Handy, from a more recent generation and the youngest members of the band, are experts in this forthright lingo as well. Their feisty solos parallel those of their elders. Panamanian pianist/composer/educator Danilo Pérez will release Providencia, his debut on the Mack Avenue Records label on August 31. This anticipated release as a leader showcases various sub styles in jazz/creative music- spanning from progressive jazz to classical music (third stream) and native Panamanian folk melodies and poly-rhythms.

Justin Time Records will release vocalist Hilary Kole’s sophomore record, You Are There, on August 10. The album features Kole in duo settings with some of the world’s greatest pianists: Hank Jones,Cedar Walton, Freddy Cole (piano and vocals), Kenny Barron, Dave Brubeck, Mike Renzi, Michel Legrand, Benny Green, Alan Broadbent, Steve Kuhn and Monty Alexander.

Tamir Hendelman - Destinations

Resonance Records is set to release Israeli Piano Prodigy Tamir Hendelman’s – Destinations on August 10. A symbiotic serenade that artfully combines jazz, Latin and classical sonorities, the album (featuring bassist Marco Panascia and Lewis Nash) is a near-perfect marriage of fire and feeling.

The award-winning jazz pianist has performed with Teddy Edwards, Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Harry Allen, Tierney Sutton, Phil Upchurch, Jeff Clayton, Rickey Woodard, Sandra Booker, Barbara Morrison and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. He has recorded with Oscar Brashear, Bob Sheppard and Jeff Clayton. He can also be heard on Brasil Brazil’s self-titled 1999 release as well as vibraphonist’s Eldad Tarmu’s CD, Aluminum Forest.
