Chad McCullough and Bram Weijters -][- URBAN NIGHTINGALE – [Origin Records, 2012] –

Now with multiple tours of Belgium and the western U.S. under their belts, Seattle-based trumpeter Chad McCullough and pianist Bram Weijters from Antwerp present their second recording of modern, lyrical originals.

With bassist Piet Verbist and drummer John Bishop, the quartet creates a perpetually unhurried environment where melodies can unfurl over harmonically compelling compositions. Bram displays a Brad Mehldau-like touch on his Buildings in a Dark City, and McCullough’s burnished flugelhorn searches on Nightingale.

Pharez Whitted, FOR THE PEOPLE

Pharez Whitted -][- FOR THE PEOPLE – [Origin Records, 2012] –

After a long hiatus from recording, Chicago trumpeter Pharez Whitted returned in 2010 with his critically acclaimed Transient Journey, and now, with another set of crackling originals. Though deeply rooted in the tradition of Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Dizzy, Pharez looks only forward with a thoroughly vital sound and modern compositional approach.

The Jason Miles-produced album is a jazzy R&B throwback; radio grooving to “Forever Funk”

Scarsdale, NY (4 October 2012): Having successfully released more than a half dozen diverse singles that charted and received radio spins around the globe, trumpeter Dennis Angel will release his debut album, the vintage sounding “Timeless Grooves,” on November 13th via Timeless Grooves Records. Angel wrote eight songs for the varied 10-track set produced by keyboardist Jason Miles (Marcus Miller, Miles Davis, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross) that brings something refreshing and unique to the contemporary jazz scene.

Angel has a way of gracefully emoting pristine pop melodies from his horn over the type of laidback grooves that bring to mind jazz-funk hits from the ‘60s and ‘70s. After experimenting and dabbling in a wide array of straight-ahead and contemporary jazz, hip hop, R&B and pop to construct an eclectic variety of instrumental and vocal singles, Angel knew he needed a producer to curate the sound for his first album. Enter Miles, who gave Angel the freedom to create and encouraged the trumpeter to also play flugelhorn on the set. Giving the well-crafted material a distinctive R&B edge, Miles (keyboards, synth bass, percussion) recruited “some of the very best players in the studio to play live” including guitarists Romero Lubambo, Nick Moroch, Dean Brown, and Will Bernard, bassist Amanda Ruzza, and drummer Brian Dunne. Joel Mofsenson plays acoustic piano on the vocal tracks and arranged two of the compositions. Long-time Angel collaborator Gottfried Stoger plays saxophones and deftly arranged the remaining compositions based on the classic American form. Continue reading →

Harris, Sánchez and Scott -][- Ninety Miles Live At Cubadisco –Mp3– [Concord Picante, 2012] –

Perhaps better than any politician or diplomat, musicians – especially jazz musicians, whose craft is in many ways an improvised form of communication – understand inherently that when we look at each other as individuals and focus on the similarities, the divide between us is actually very short – less than a hundred miles.

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sánchez and trumpeter Christian Scott first crossed that divide on their acclaimed two-disc CD/DVD package, Ninety Miles, released June 21, 2011. Recorded during the same trip, their first and only live performance, Ninety Miles Live At Cubadisco, is set for special U.S. digital release September 25, 2012 (international release dates may vary) on Concord Picante. Ron Miles, QUIVER

Master trumpeter Ron Miles injects his radiant, lyrical tone directly into the lifeblood of American music on his latest release, Quiver. A compelling, inviting trio date with guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Brian Blade, Quiver combines the singing melodicism of American folk musics, the heightened communication of the most progressive jazz forms, and an entrancing, airy openness. The album finds three genre-defying musical masters at their creative best, lacing easy camaraderie with virtuosic interaction. Continue reading →
