Steve Kuhn -][- TRANCES –MP3 – [ECM, 1974]

This album has inexplicably been omitted from the ECM release schedule in Europe and the US – thankfully the Japanese have done us the favour of reissuing this classic ECM album, recorded around 1975. It features Jack De Johnette on drums, Steve Swallow on electric bass, Sue Evans on percussion, and of course Steve Kuhn on piano and electric piano.

The title track has a hypnotic opening with a simple piano tune and a pulsing bass line, and evolves into a lush and romantic showpiece for Kuhn’s piano. A couple of tracks are more fusion oriented, with the electric piano featuring prominently. One of these, “Something Everywhere”, has a Latin flavour. Other pieces are much more Avante Garde. The last track on the album is a strange little piece featuring the voice of presumably Steve Kuhn, telling a little story – it’s a fascinating end to a varied and lovely album. -[P. Shirley Crabbe -][- HOME –MP3– [MaiSong Music & Entertainment, 2011]

Jazz vocalist Shirley Crabbe sings songs that speak to the heart. As a teenager, Shirley was inspired by a performance of Ella Fitzgerald singing the song “A Tisket, A Tasket” in an old Abbot and Costello movie. “I’ve always had a passion for singing, but when I heard Ella sing, I knew that “jazz singing” was what I really wanted to do.”

Following her passion, Shirley pursued her dreams first to Illinois to earn a Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University, and then back home to New York, to study Voice at the distinguished Manhattan School of Music (MSM). During the day she studied classical music uptown at MSM, but in the evening, she traveled downtown to sing jazz in the clubs. Shirley has performed at festivals, jazz clubs and concert series in New York City and it’s surrounding area. Her most recent appearance was at the Metropolitan Room. She has also performed at the world-famous jazz club Birdland, appeared as a soloist at Madison Square Garden in its renowned Paramount Theater and opened for the jazz icon Abby Lincoln. She has also performed with the celebrated jazz pianist Harold Mabern and bassist Jamil Nasser. -[Biography]-

With experience as a nonprofit manager, concert promoter, music producer and musician in Los Angeles, Gauthier brings many relevant skills to the 20-year-old nonprofit organization. Gauthier will work closely with Ruth Price, Bakery founder, President and Artistic Director.

Culver City recently agreed to transfer a parcel of land adjacent to the Kirk Douglas Theater to the Jazz Bakery for a new jazz performance and cultural center to be designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. The hiring of an executive director marks an important step toward strengthening the Bakery’s organizational resources and capacity, and establishing a new home for this cherished Westside institution. Ruth Price said, “I’ve been impressed by Jeff for years as a musician, record company producer, and forward-thinking entrepreneur. This is serendipity at its best!” Continue reading →

Luis Perdomo -][- Universal Mind –MP3– [Now Forward Music, 2012] –

Luis Perdomo grew up in a home filled with music. Born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1971, Luis was exposed to just about every style of music by his father, an avid music fan and collector. Alongside salsa, Latin, R & B, and classical, the young Perdomo heard jazz greats like Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson, two of his earliest and most important musical influences. Drawn to jazz and to the piano at an early age, Luis was making regular professional appearances on Venezuelan TV and radio by the time he was twelve. It was about this same time that Luis started to think more and more about the possibility of pursuing a life in music. The more he began to listen and to read about jazz—his tastes had expanded to include players like Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane—the more he became aware of one undeniable truth. All his favorite artists lived and/or recorded in New York City. Thus, it was only a matter of time before he too would make that move. Continue reading →
